The CATTR ferry package will deliver:

  • 6 low-emission ferries
  • wharf upgrades and charging infrastructure at Hobsonville Point, Half Moon Bay and the Downtown Ferry Terminal (3 piers).

We will be installing charging infrastructure on the wharves in a staged approach, starting in late 2024. We’ll provide detailed customer communications before beginning this work.

Project background

Ferries have long been part of Auckland’s public transport history, with the first scheduled ferry service back in 1865. Over the decades, ferry travel has changed but continues to play an important role in Auckland’s transport network.

Diesel ferries currently contribute more than 20% of public transport carbon emissions but make up only 6% of public transport use.

We have the opportunity to transform our ferry network and make it better. We’re doing this by investing in new electric and electric-hybrid ferries to grow the network and provide a reliable, greener ferry service.

Decarbonising Aucklands fleet of old, noisy diesel vessels will also help us move towards reaching net zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in Auckland’s Climate Plan.
