Auckland Transport’s Walking Programme seeks to promote easier, healthier, more efficient and more inclusive walking options for everyone to move around Tāmaki Makaurau.

Measures of success will include:

  • more people walking to and from work, school and public transport
  • primary walking network improvement
  • a reduction in serious injuries and deaths, alongside a perceived increase in safety.

In addition to improving and connecting walkways, we plan to encourage behavioural change by promoting walking through campaigns, events and other marketing efforts.

Infrastructure projects

Our focus is investment in pedestrian projects for short journeys (less than 2km) to improve safety and access for all people regardless of age, ability or background.

We plan to deliver 35km of walking connectivity improvements regionally and comprehensive walking investment in Manurewa.

Network connectivity improvements may include:

  • new footpaths
  • footpath widening
  • crossing improvements.
