Carlton Gore Road, Newmarket - Pedestrian Crossing Improvements

Consultation status: closed 14 March 2017

We are proposing to upgrade two existing zebra crossings in Newmarket. These pedestrian crossings are located outside number 103 and number 108 on Carlton Gore Road.

Changes include:

  • Upgrade the existing zebra crossing platforms to raised speed tables.
  • Install speed table approach warning signs.
  • Install "20 km" speed advisory signs.
  • Reconstruct footpath outside 103 Carlton Gore Road.
  • Reconstruct the pram crossings.
  • Install new cesspits.

Why the changes are required

It has been observed that drivers are experiencing difficulty distinguishing these pedestrian crossings, especially when approaching from the west. These upgrades will improve visibility for drivers when pedestrians are intending to or using the pedestrian crossings.

The changes also provide a safer environment by lowering the speed of vehicles approaching the pedestrian crossings.

Feedback results

The proposal received overall support with some concerns raised by respondents. After reviewing this feedback and all other supporting evidence, the proposal will proceed with minor changes to the next stage of detailed planning.

Specific feedback

Requests for additional warning signs and speed calming

We will upgrade these crossings to raised tables, reducing the overall speed on Carlton Gore Road.

As a result of the feedback we will also make some minor changes to the final design, including larger signs and additional road marking.

Changes to parking restrictions or removing more parking

We do not believe there is a need to alter or remove more parking spaces along this section of Carlton Gore Road. We will monitor the upgraded crossings to ensure that they operate safely and will make changes if required.

Concerns about the George Street intersection

Concerns were raised about the layout of the George Street, Carlton Gore Road and Football Road intersection. We will investigate changes to this intersection at a later date.

Next steps

We expect to begin this work from in the 2017/18 financial year (starting July 2017), subject to design changes or funding issues.

Contractors will issue 48-hour notice to affected residents prior to construction work.
