Dominion Road, Mount Eden - Bus stop improvements Dominion Road, Mount Eden - Bus stop improvements

Proposal status: Feedback closed 22 December 2020. Last updated 25 January 2021.

Reference number: RTV-319

Proposal outcome

In December 2020, we proposed changes to the bus stop at 591 Dominion Road to improve the safety of people using buses and of pedestrians. These changes are in response to an incident last year where a bus entering this stop clipped a shop veranda. After reviewing all the feedback, we are proceeding with the work as proposed.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed in late January – March 2021. We will be in touch with local residents and business prior to any construction taking place.

We're proposing improvements in your area

Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them. We are proposing some improvements to your area and are asking for your views.

We would like to improve the safety of people using buses and of pedestrians by making some changes to the bus stop at 591 Dominion Road. These changes are in response to an incident last year where a bus entering this stop clipped a shop veranda.

The changes we are proposing

  • Widen the footpath between 583 and 599 Dominion Road and paint new bus stop road markings in the current bus lane outside 591 Dominion Road.
  • Reinstall the entries to the driveways at 591 and 599 Dominion Road.
  • Paint new broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times). One on-street parking space will be removed.
  • Relocate the bus stop signs and bench.

Auckland Transport would like to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. There are currently temporary safety measures in place at this bus stop to guide bus drivers and prevent them from getting too close the shop veranda. As the veranda is unable to be cut back, the changes proposed offer a permanent solution to this hazard by increasing the distance between the bus stop and the veranda. This aims to ensure the safety of people using buses and those on the street.

Removing some on street parking is necessary to support these changes. We understand removing parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal.

More information

The temporary safety measures currently in place at the bus stop include flexi-posts at the kerb line to guide bus drivers away from the shop veranda.

Mount Eden: Safe with us

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Dominion Road are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
