Proposal outcome

In May 2022, we proposed changes to improve pedestrian safety outside Te Huruhi Primary School.

After reviewing all the feedback, we are proceeding with the work as proposed. Thank you for sharing your local knowledge with us. These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.

What happens next

We will likely start construction in March 2023. We will be in touch with residents and businesses before construction starts.

We're proposing improvements in your area

Auckland Transport would like to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. These changes were requested by the Waiheke Local Board on behalf of Te Huruhi Primary School. The proposed changes aim to improve pedestrian safety on Donald Bruce Road, especially for school children walking to and from school.

We are proposing to:

  • Install a raised zebra crossing outside Te Huruhi Primary School. The crossing will be raised on a speed bump with a flat section in the middle where people can walk across the road. This will result in the loss of 7 on-street parking spaces.
  • Extend the footpath at the crossing points so that pedestrians are able to use the crossing safely.
  • Install tactile pavers at the crossing points. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Install new signs, streetlights, and road markings to support the crossing.
  • Install high friction surfacing on the approaches to the crossing after the re-surfacing of the road.
  • Create a berm across the current car park entrance opposite 26 Donald Bruce so there is one entry/exit to the car park.
  • Create a continuous footpath across the driveways of both car parks.
  • Install bollards outside 26 and 32 Donald Bruce Road.
  • Remove some of the broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) on the school side of Donald Bruce Road to create 5 additional on-street parking spaces. This will result in the net loss of 2 on-street parking spaces.

The raised zebra crossing would reduce driver speeds and improve visibility between motorists and pedestrians waiting to cross the road at this location. The changes would also improve local connections, making it easier to move around the area using active modes of transport like walking or taking the bus.

We understand that removing parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal while maintaining good lines of sight between road users and pedestrians. As part of this proposal, we would also create 5 new on-street parking spaces by removing some of the existing broken yellow lines.
