Why the changes are needed

The changes are required because Auckland Transport has received concerns regarding the parked vehicles around number #35 Mayoral Drive creating safety issue for vehicles entering Mayoral Street from Wellesley St East. The parking impedes the movement of vehicles.

Feedback results

The proposal received positive feedback with some concerns raised by respondents. After reviewing this feedback and all other supporting evidence, the proposal will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning.

Specific feedback

  • Concern that cars are often driving through the red traffic lights and endangering pedestrians crossing at this location. Auckland Transport acknowledges this issue and we recommend that you contact New Zealand Police as they are responsible for managing traffic light enforcement and can be contacted through their General Enquiries form
  • Request for the Wellesley Street and Mayoral Drive intersection to be redesigned and to apply the 'Roads and Streets Framework' to this project to slow traffic. Respondents were concerned about dangers to pedestrians and cyclists from cars trying to 'beat' the red light. This request is out of scope for this proposal which focuses on road safety at the narrowing of lanes on Mayoral Drive, Auckland CBD. If you would like your request to be considered by AT for future development works, please fill in a feedback form or report a problem to be fixed.

Next Steps

We expect to introduce this work between July 2018 and June 2019, subject to further changes in design or funding issues. Contractors will notify all affected residents prior to construction work.
