Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Harbour, Central Auckland - Speed Limit Change Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Harbour, Central Auckland - Speed Limit Change

Consultation status: closed 9 February 2017

We are proposing the following:

  • Change the speed limit from 50 km/hr to 30 km/hr on the area known as the Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Harbour, specifically on the roads shown on the attached drawing.
  • Install a flush median on Hamer Street and parking improvements on Brigham Street to make the roads more appropriate for a 30 km/hr speed environment.

Why the changes are required

Wynyard Quarter is currently undergoing a significant redevelopment into a mixed residential and commercial area that attracts many visitors, especially pedestrians and cyclists. The proposed speed limit of 30km/hr will make the environment safer, and will also formalise the temporary speed limit for the sites in the Wynyard Quarter currently being redeveloped.

The proposed layout on Hamer Street and Brigham Street aims to create a lower speed environment in line with the proposed 30 km/hr speed limit.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

The proposed speed limit change received mostly positive feedback from the community, while the new parking layout on Brigham Street and the and flush median on Hamer Street received concerns from local businesses.

After reviewing this feedback and all other supporting evidence, the proposed parking layout and flush median will not be implemented. This also means that the 30 km/hr speed limit will not be introduced on Hamer Street and Brigham Street. The local businesses were in support of these changes.

The 30km/hr speed limit will proceed as proposed on the rest of the roads in the Wynyard Quarter.

Specific feedback and proposed solution

  • Request for repeater signs, carriageway markings or speed cameras be included to facilitate compliance. Repeater signs will be installed throughout the area to remind drivers of the speed limit. Speed cameras are not appropriate as it is a low speed environment and should be self-enforcing.

  • Suggestion to make Brigham Street and Hamer Street a 1-way loop. Introducing a one-way system would lead to increased traffic speeds as there would be no opposing traffic. It would also cause an inconvenience to local businesses.

  • Request to install cycle lanes through Wynyard Quarter. Having designated cycle lanes in the Wynyard Quarter is not feasible at this stage. The introduction of a 30km/h speed limit will make the area a lower speed environment where cyclists will be able to share the road with vehicles.

  • Request to install improvements at the Daldy Street and Gaunt Street intersection. We are planning improvements for this intersection as part of the Wynard Quarter Improvements Project. We will consult with the public on this project when it’s ready.

  • We have also received other feedback outside the scope of the project. If you would like your request to be considered by AT for future development works, please provide feedback or report a problem here.

Next stage

We expect to change the speed limit and install new road signs by June 2017, subject to legalisation of the new speed limit.
