Riverside Road, Orewa - Installing a new bus stop for school buses

Consultation status: closed 14 December 2016

We are proposing to install a new bus stop for school buses at the location shown in the consultation plan on Riverside Road, Orewa. The proposed bus stop will have capacity for two buses and will operate during the following times:

  • Between 8am to 8.45am on school days only.
  • Between 2.45pm to 3.45pm on school days only.

The bus stop will be marked with associated No stopping at all times restrictions to allow drivers enough space to manoeuvre safely.

Why changes are required

Earlier this year we consulted on a scheme in response to the high demand of school bus services for Orewa College. Since then we’ve looked at the scheme and we now propose a different solution to manage the number of buses while minimising the impact of this service to local residents and businesses.

Feedback

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

The proposal received positive feedback with some concerns raised by respondents. After reviewing this feedback and all other supporting evidence, the proposal will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning.

Specific feedback and proposed solution

  • A request for a raised crossing at the school entrance and on Maygrove Drive to allow safe access to the bus stop. There are sufficient safety measures along this section of Riverside Road. This is a slow-speed residential area and there is not enough evidence to support a raised crossing at this stage.
  • A request to swap the school bus stop location with the parking location outside the kindergarten. The car parking spaces outside the kindergarten are used by parents to safely drop off/pick up their pre-school children. As a result, we do not support disruptions to these particular parking spaces.

Next stage

We expect to introduce this work by April 2017, subject to any further changes in design or funding issues. Contractors will issue a 48-hour notice to all residents in the area prior to starting construction work.
