We propose to install a Zebra crossing on John Street outside Pukekohe High School.
The site is the main crossing point between Pukekohe High School and Bledisloe Park. The addition of the zebra crossing will provide a safe crossing point for students and members of the public.
The proposal received mixed feedback with some concerns raised by respondents. After reviewing this feedback and all other supporting evidence, the proposal will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning.
- Concerns that there is going to be sufficient visibility and warning for drivers from both directions. We have designed this crossing with side islands to address the visibility short fall in this location. The raised table will also slow down vehicles which will make crossing safe.
- Concerns that the side islands create pinch points for cyclists. We have chosen this design to address the lack of visibility for pedestrians and motorists at this location. A zebra crossing with side islands provides a safe crossing area for the high number of pedestrians. Installing a crossing without side islands would provide inadequate visibility for drivers and pedestrians. The proposed raised table is also expected to reduce vehicle speeds through this area and help to create a safer road environment for both pedestrians and cyclists.
We expect to introduce this work in the 2017/18 financial year, subject to any further changes in design or funding issues.
Contractors will issue 48-hour notice to all affected residents prior to construction work.
