Proposal status: Feedback closed

Reference number: 20100459

Proposal outcome

In December 2022, we proposed changes to upgrade the footpath at Kitchener Road, Waiuku. After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work as proposed. These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed in September 2023. We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

Community feedback

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. The following is a summary of your feedback and our response to community questions:

Additional Crossing

  • Feedback: Very happy with the proposed changes and having a footpath on that side of the road. Others in the neighbourhood are also very happy but would like another pedestrian island crossing by the netball courts down from Rasecourse Road. Concerns when pedestrians (mostly school children) start to cross the road but then get stuck half way

Response: Our initial investigation has not found a demand for pedestrian crossing. However, understanding that with the new footpath upgrade this might change therefore we will consider this in the foreseeable future. We will conduct an investigation into the demand for pedestrian crossing once the footpath upgrade has been completed.

  • Feedback: Please consider additional crossings for Kitchener road with the netball courts, hospital, kindy, school and bus stop on the same side of the road but only one crossing island situated past Hamilton drive, another safe crossing space would be useful. Current crossing provides access to bus stop

Response: Our initial investigation has not found a demand for pedestrian crossing. However, understanding that with the new footpath upgrade this might change therefore we will consider this in the foreseeable future. We will conduct an investigation into the demand for pedestrian crossing once the footpath upgrade has been completed.

We're proposing improvements in your area

Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them. We are proposing some improvements to your area.

We are addressing safety concerns raised by the community due to the lack of walking facilities along Kitchener Road in Waiuku. We ask for just a few minutes of your time to give us your feedback.

We are proposing to:

  • Construct a new footpath along Kitchener Road, from Brights Road to the section of existing footpath outside 89 Kitchener Road.
  • Install a give way sign at the intersection of Brights Road and Kitchener Road.
  • Slope the footpath and install tactile pavers on either side of Brights Road. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people find their way to crossing points.
  • Move the bus stop outside 82-84 Kitchener Road slightly further west and increase its length to 15m.

We have a vision for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland where no one dies or is seriously injured on our transport network. We want everyone to be safe regardless of how they are travelling.

This project along Kitchener Road contributes to Tāmaki Makaurau’s Vision Zero goal by filling a gap in the footpath network. This upgrade would provide a safe and continuous footpath along this section of Kitchener Road which would improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

We are also proposing to make Brights Road give way controlled to help improve safety of traffic turning out from Brights Road.

Waiuku: Safe with us

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Kitchener Road are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
