Reference number: MIP2122-019

Proposal outcome

In February 2022, we proposed changes to improve pedestrian safety and access to the bus stops near 34 Whitford Road. After reviewing all the feedback, we are proceeding with the work as proposed. These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed in the 2022/23 financial year before June 2023, subject the budget availability. We will be in touch with nearby residents prior to any construction taking place.

Community feedback

Thank you for adding your voice to this proposal. Your local knowledge has helped us make this decision for your neighbourhood. The majority of respondents supported this proposal, with comments telling us that they believed it would make crossing Whitford Road safer. Through the consultation we also heard some suggestions about how to support other active modes of transport like people taking the bus or cycling. A summary of suggestions and queries from the community, and our responses to them, is below.

  • Suggestion to improve the bus stops with more lighting and better shelter from rain.

We will review the lighting as part of the detailed design stage of this project. The existing shelters have been provided by Auckland Transport's commercial partner for roadside advertising, oOH!Media, and are not owned by AT, so we're not able to change the design of the shelter itself.

  • Suggestion to install cycle racks for "last mile" connections and those using both bicycles and buses to get where they're going.

We are currently in the process of developing a programme to install bike parks and racks. Our focus is to install them in and near metropolitan centres, town centres, public transport facilities and on the road near community facilities to ensure that the highest-benefit locations and prioritised. You can request cycle parking here - the requests are reviewed every three months.

  • Request for real time bus ETA information boards at the bus stops.

Real time boards are installed at bus stop locations with a high number of passengers using the stop. Current boarding numbers on Whitford Road do not support the installation of real time boards at this time.

  • Concern the proposal will worsen existing congestion on Whitford Road, especially around school times.

We understand that the traffic is busy on arterial roads like Whitford Road during peak hours, however there is a need to provide a safer crossing location for pedestrians on Whitford Road. The proposed pedestrian island is expected to have minimal impact on traffic congestion as drivers are not required to stop for people crossing the road at this type of crossing.

We're proposing improvements in your area

We have a proposal for a new crossing point at 34 Whitford Road that would make it safer and easier for people to access the bus stops and Morrin Cooper Park, and we’d like to hear your views.

We are proposing to:

  • Install a pedestrian refuge island crossing outside 34 Whitford Road in Botany Downs. This would involve installing kerb ramps on both sides of the road and a traffic island in the middle, which provides a comfortable place for people to stop and wait for a safe time to cross the street.
  • Install tactile pavers on the kerbs and the traffic island, which are yellow textured tiles that help visually impaired people find their way at the crossing.
  • Bring the bus stops at 36 Whitford Road and 39 Whitford Road up to standard by painting white outlines of the stops and “BUS STOP” at each.
  • Paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times lines) near the crossing and the bus stops. These would remove 16 on-street parking spaces.

A pedestrian refuge island crossing would give people a safe way to cross Whitford Road to go to the Morrin Cooper Park or catch their bus. This type of crossing does not give pedestrians the right of way but it helps to break up the journey across the road.

We are proposing to paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times lines) to keep the road clear so drivers and people trying to cross the road can see each other. The parking restrictions would also enable buses to pull into and out of the bus stops safely. We understand that removing on-street parking is inconvenient so we have reduced the parking removal to the minimum while still maintaining clear lines of sight for all road users. These changes aim to make crossing Whitford Road easier and safer.
