Proposal outcome

In September 2022, we proposed to improve pedestrian safety in Henderson by upgrading the crossing at 124 Sturges Road. After reviewing all the feedback, we are proceeding with the work as proposed.

These works will help support our Vision Zero goal. This proposal is supported with funding from the Auckland regional fuel tax.

What happens next

The proposal will now progress to the next stage of finalising the design. We will be in touch with local residents and business prior to any construction taking place.

Community feedback

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. We received a small amount of feedback but mostly with interesting concerns about the proposal. A summary of the additional comments and queries we received, and our responses to them, is below.

Parking losses

  • Concern that the parking loss near the proposed location will be inconvenient to nearby residents.

Auckland Transport's response:

We understand that the removal of parking is inconvenient and have minimised it as much as possible while still ensuring safety. Preventing parking is necessary near the raised crossing because we have to ensure that the pedestrians and drivers can easily see each other.

Speed table

  • Concern that the speed table is not necessary as the pedestrian refuge would be sufficient in ensuring pedestrian safety and visibility. Suggestion that instead of speed tables, simply install signage and road markings to inform approaching motorists about the roundabout and zebra crossing.

Auckland Transport's response:

There’s currently a flat zebra crossing here with signs and road markings to advise drivers as they approach. During investigation, we identified that drivers still approach the existing zebra crossing at high speed. Concerns have also been raised by residents regarding speeding along Sturges Road. Raising the zebra crossing will encourage lower driving speeds and keep all road users and pedestrians safer, as lower speeds mean less harm will be caused to people in the event of a crash. It will also raise crossing pedestrians to eye-level of approaching drivers, making pedestrians more visible.

Traffic congestion

  • Concern that the proposal will worsen the congestion especially during drop off and pick up times.

We do not expect that the raised zebra crossing will significantly increase congestion along Sturges Road as drivers already have to give way for pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road. We will continue to monitor the area should the situation change.

Miscellaneous

  • Request to incorporate consulted cycleway into the designed proposal.

Auckland Transport's response:

The Henderson cycle network does not include cycle facilities on Sturges road. However, there are features of this proposal (such as the traffic islands) that have been designed for ease of removal, should cycling improvements be prioritised for Sturges Road in the future.

We're proposing improvements in your area

We are proposing to improve pedestrian safety in Henderson by upgrading the crossing at 124 Sturges Road.

We are proposing to:

  • Install a zebra crossing on top of a flat, wide speed bump at 124 Sturges Road outside Western Heights School and Sturges Road Kindergarten. This will replace the existing crossing which is level to the road surface.
  • Install a pedestrian refuge at the centre of the crossing where pedestrians can safely wait to cross the road.
  • Paint broken yellow lines to give pedestrians clear visibility when approaching the crossing. These markings will also allow the width of the traffic lane to remain the same before and after the crossing, avoiding a potential pinch point. This will result in the removal of 4 parking spaces. We understand that removing parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal as much as possible, while also ensuring the safety of all road users.
  • Reinstate the berm outside 115 Sturges Road where the previous bus shelter was located.
  • Install signage and road markings so incoming motorists know they are approaching a raised crossing.

Auckland Transport would like to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. This part of Sturges Road has been highlighted as an area in need of safer pedestrian crossing facilities, especially for school children from Western Heights School and Sturges Road Kindergarten. There have been at least three crashes reported in the area over the last five years due to vehicles losing control on the road. The proposal is designed to provide a safer crossing facility for pedestrians by:

Encouraging driver to take extra care and slow down when approaching the crossing.

  • Encouraging driver to take extra care and slow down when approaching the crossing.
  • Raising pedestrians, especially children, crossing the road to be at eye-level of approaching motorists, making them easier to see.
  • Improving visibility between motorists and people waiting to cross the road.
  • Making it more comfortable for people with prams and wheelchairs to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
