We're making improvements in your area

To make public transport a more viable option for people who live in Te Atatū Peninsula, it is important that the bus services are reliable. To help with this we are making some improvements to Te Atatū Road.

Our role is to ensure that people can move around the city easily and safely. Auckland Transport and its contractor Fulton Hogan are set to  re-start work at Te Atatū Road. Our works involve upgrade of pedestrian crossings, footpaths, cycle lanes, road surface works and line marking.

We are kindly asking you to plan ahead, be cautious and follow signs and traffic management instructions.

Changes we're making

Te Atatū Road between Yeovil Avenue and Gloria Avenue

  • Convert the outside lane into a bus priority T2 lane.
  • Upgrade the existing cycle lanes to protected cycle lanes.
  • Upgrade the existing refuge crossing south of Gunner Drive to a raised pedestrian crossing.
  • Install a new refuge islands and pram crossing on Yeovil Road at the intersection with Te Atatū Road.

Old Te Atatū Road between Parkvale Grove and Te Atatū Road

  • Implement a short priority T2 bus lane on approach of the bus stop and intersection (for inbound buses).
  • Allow buses to turn right from the left lane at Old Te Atatū Road and Te Atatū Road intersection
  • Relocate and modify the existing traffic island and flush median on Te Atatū Road to accommodate tracking. This is based on vehicle tracking using a 12.6 metre bus and 10.3 metre truck simultaneously turning at the intersection
  • installing a raised pedestrian crossing within vicinity of the existing pair of bus stops and Parkvale Grove.

Operating times for the T2 and bus lanes:

Te Atatū Road

  • Southbound (toward motorway) – 7AM-10AM Monday to Friday.
  • Northbound (toward peninsula) – 3PM-7PM Monday to Friday.

Old Te Atatū Road

  • Southbound (toward Te Atatū Road) – 7AM-10AM Monday to Friday.

The changes are part of the with the Northwestern Bus Improvements project and will improve the level of service as well as improving the overall operation and safety of the corridor.

Auckland Transport has created a strategy to improve the efficiency of the bus network to meet the projected population growth and the demand for public transport in the coming years.

Why these improvements are needed

By 2046, there will be nearly triple the number of people travelling along the Northwestern Motorway (SH16). More people need to travel by bus and multiple occupancy vehicles, or congestion will get worse, and journeys will take longer.

This project aims to:

  • Improve bus travel times and reliability of public transport to, from and within the Northwest, including services that connect to the Northwestern Express services at the Te Atatū interchange.
  • Better utilise limited road space and reduce the need to expand existing roads (expanding roads is not a feasible option to accommodate ongoing traffic growth). AT’s Urban Street and Road Design Guide (PDF 11.6MB) shows the space efficiency of each transport mode.
  • Enable traffic to flow freely, which will reduce harmful emissions and carbon dioxide. Overall emissions per person will also reduce when higher occupancy vehicles are used.
  • Minimise travel delays to vehicles using the general traffic lane by encouraging more people to travel by bus and high occupancy vehicles.
  • Maintain and enhance the safety of all road users, particularly vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and people on bikes.
  • Create a more connected city with improved access to opportunities.
