Te Atatu Road, Te Atatu Peninsula - Zebra Crossing Upgrade Te Atatu Road, Te Atatu Peninsula - Zebra Crossing Upgrade

Consultation status: closed 4 April 2017

We are proposing to make the following changes on Te Atatu Road:

  • Rebuild existing raised zebra crossing to ATCOP (Auckland Transport Code of Practice) standard.
  • Relocate street lighting and belisha beacons.
  • Remove island.
  • Install new directional tactile pavers.

Why the changes are required

We would like to bring the zebra crossing in line with ATCOP standards in order to create a safer town centre environment and to promote pedestrian movements within the town centre due to this crossing being adjacent to the community centre and local shops.

Feedback results

The proposal received mixed feedback with some concerns raised by respondents. After reviewing this feedback and other supporting evidence, the proposal will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning.

Next steps

We expect to introduce this work by June 20187, subject to further design changes or funding issues.

Contractors will notify residents 48 hours before construction work.

Specific feedback

Concern that the proposal is located at an existing pinch point for cyclists.

Removing the central traffic island eliminates this pinch point and slows down vehicles, improving cyclist safety at this zebra crossing.

Concern that the proposal does not acknowledge the fact that Te Atatu is a key route on the Auckland Cycle Network.

Prior to the external consultation, our Walking and Cycling team confirmed that Te Atatu Peninsula is a key route on Auckland's Cycle Network. The team's comments were incorporated into design considerations and they are in support of the proposal.
