Making Glen Innes town centre safer for all road users Making Glen Innes town centre safer for all road users

Date:14 June 2022

Auckland Transport (AT) is asking the public for feedback on road safety improvements which, if implemented, would make Glen Innes town centre safer for people walking and cycling, especially tamariki and senior citizens.

AT collaborated with a working group consisting of Glen Innes Business Association, Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, Tāmaki Regeneration, Shun Di Group and Bike Auckland on a design proposal aimed at making it safer to walk, bike or drive around the Glen Innes town centre.

AT also consulted with mana whenua (Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei, Te Ākitai Waiohua, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Pāoa Trust Board), Fire and Emergency NZ, Pak’nSave and Z Energy.

The improvements Auckland Transport is asking for feedback on include: Proposed raised pedestrian crossings on Apirana Avenue and Maybury street, a proposed raised table (wide flat speed bump) on Line Road, adding five car parking spaces on Apirana Avenue and removing five car parking spaces on Maybury Street and four parking spaces on Line Road.

Between 2016 and 2020, there were 12 deaths and 164 serious injuries in the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki area.

AT’s Stacey van der Putten, Executive General Manager of Safety, says that road trauma is both a transport and a public health issue for the region with significant economic costs.

“More importantly, the after-effects of road trauma on victims’ whānau, friends and community are truly devastating. The improvements would complement proposed safer speed limits within Glen Innes town centre and they would make the road feel more natural to drive 30km/h on.”

“They would also give more confidence to other road users to move around the town centre without the fear of incurring road related trauma.”

The project team is running in-person and online drop-in sessions between 13 and 18 June 2022.

The proposal is open for public feedback from now until 3 July 2022.
