- Te Onewa Northcote Point Wharf today reopens for ferry services. The wharf has been closed since 14 February while berth face improvements have been undertaken which will better assist ferry operators.
- The improvements come as a result of feedback over the past year, following the new wharf facilities opening in early 2021.
“Through close collaboration with the Fullers crews, AT have implemented a range of improvements that will provide ferry crews with a broader range of berthing options. These improvements will translate into a smoother, more reliable ferry service for customers,” says Josh Hyland, Delivery Manager - PT, Facilities & Structures. The improvements include:
Installing three additional berthing piles, which increase operational flexibility and potential manoeuvrability for vessel skippers.
Upgrading the fender system, which absorbs the impact from vessels whilst berthing at the wharf, resulting in a smoother passenger experience.
Installing pile-mounted bollards to remove the fixed lines, which improves ongoing safety and service reliability.
Previously expected to reopen in March, the works have seen delays due to COVID-19 related issues with supply chain, materials and resourcing. The wharf has now reopened following berthing trials by ferry operator Fullers last week.
"I am pleased to see this crucial piece of public transport infrastructure open again and would like to thank residents and users for their incredible patience”, says Councillor Richard Hills. “As patronage slowly increases towards normal levels, our community looks forward to an increase in services to match, as soon as staffing numbers allow. Covid absence and workforce recruitment issues have put pressure on ferry crew numbers, which is something Auckland Transport, in partnership with Fullers, have assured me they are working to address.”
With the reopening of the wharf, AT encourages commuters to take advantage of the Government’s extended offer of half price fares for public transport, which includes the Te Onewa Northcote Point ferry service. There’s never been a better time to hop onboard and explore Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland.
