Public transport options to Big Day Out 2014

For the first time in 20 years the Big Day Out comes to Western Springs. Music fans going to the BDO this Friday, 17 January are advised to plan their travel and check out transport options to the event.

Travel on special event services is included with an event ticket. Public transport will be busy, so make a plan – especially on how to get home. Timetable and further information can be found at or by phoning 09 366 6400.

Passengers are reminded that alcohol and drugs are not permitted for consumption on any of these services. For the safety of our commuters, any persons who are drunk or worse for wear will be refused travel.

Bus services to the event

Special event buses from the CBD will be running from bus stop 7301 on Quay St (between Queen St and Commerce St) to Western Springs and return throughout the day. Buses depart approximately every 15 minutes between 9am and 2pm and approximately every 30 minutes between 2pm and 9pm.

Northern Express services will be running to the standard scheduled timetable.

Bus services from the event

Return services from Western Springs depart from bus stop 8123 on Great North Road (between Motions Road and St Lukes Road). From 9pm onwards special event buses will be running back to the CBD. The last service departs at 1am.

From 9:00pm onwards, special event buses will depart from bus stop 7301 on Quay Street (between Queen Street and Commerce Street) travelling to all the Northern Busway Stations. The last service departs at 2am.

Special event bus services are operated by NZ Bus and Ritchies.

Train services

Ride into Britomart via train and board the special event buses departing from bus stop 7301 on Quay St (between Queen St and Commerce St).

Post event, additional train services will depart from Britomart running along the Western, Onehunga, Southern and Manukau Lines. Rail buses will be in effect along the Eastern Lines.

Please note: Direct travel to Western Springs via the Western Train Stations is not advised. It is recommended that all train passengers travel via Britomart and transfer to an event bus.


Normal ferry services and fares will apply. 

Driving to the event

Drivers heading west on the Northwestern Motorway need to be aware that delays are expected at St Lukes Interchange (Western Springs) at peak times during the day and the evening. The citybound ramps and Great North Road, alongside the stadium park will be closed from 8pm on the night. Bullock Track, Station Road and some neighbouring roads will also be closed.
