Thousands of Aucklanders get On-board

PasifikaAucklanders are using buses, trains and ferries to get to special events in record numbers.

So far this year special event public transport services run by Auckland Transport have carried more than 130,000 people to sports matches, concerts, and other events like Pasifika.

At Eden Park alone almost half a million fans have travelled on public transport to support their favourite rugby, league, soccer, and cricket teams since the Rugby World Cup.

The recent Dick Smith NRL Nines league event saw a record 54 per cent of the crowd travel on public transport.

Auckland Transport Operations Centre Manager, John Strawbridge, says that with the high numbers now using public transport the upcoming rugby test match against Australia in August could see the one millionth passenger transported to special events in Auckland since 2011.

“A key objective of the Rugby World Cup was to change attitudes to public transport.

“Just a few years ago less than five per cent of people were using public transport to get to and from events and we are now regularly seeing half the crowd or more use our services. With the cost of public transport included in ticket prices, it is the most reliable and hassle-free way of getting to any major event anywhere in Auckland,” says Mr Strawbridge.
