Auckland Transport (AT) is committed to creating an equitable and inclusive workplace representative of Tāmaki Makaurau. AT is moving to develop, grow and inspire Pasifika to step up and create an environment where we have a seat at the table. The Pasifika Strategy explains the context for change, AT’s vision and priorities and targets for AT to meet by 2023.

Strategic Focus

Our Pasifika strategy focuses on four priorities:

  1. Grow Pasifika Talent and our workforce
Ensure our talent attraction and selection processes support Pasifika. We aim to become an employer of choice for Pasifika talent.
  2. Create a culture at Auckland Transport where Pasifika thrives
Identify potential Pasifika talent, ensure talent development meets the needs of the diverse workforce. Ensure there is both gender and ethnically diverse representation in the senior leadership team.
  3. Ensure equity and fairness
Understand the engagement drivers of Pasifika. Utilise our connect networks to create a sense of community and belonging. A vehicle to celebrate and share Pasifika culture and agitate for change.
  4. Engage with our communities, partners, and stakeholders to create opportunities for Pasifika through Auckland Transport’s activities.
The notion of fair treatment, equitable access to opportunities and advancement, and the elimination of barriers to progress.

Why it is important to us

Pasifika are one of the top three fastest growing ethnicities in New Zealand representing 15.5 % of the Auckland population and 8.1% of the NZ population which is up from 7.4% in the 2013 statistics NZ census. Auckland is the largest Polynesian city in the world. AT is Auckland’s transport provider, with a workforce containing only 6% Pasifika employees. A large majority of Pasifika employees are also sitting outside AT senior and professional roles (Band I and above).

We want to lift up, empower and grow our Pasifika employees and see them sitting at the decision-making table. To truly reflect the communities we serve we need to deliver our refreshed Pasifika strategy to build an organisation truly representative of Aotearoa.
