In most cases, your top-up will be available to use in 1 hour for travel by bus, train, and ferry. If you need to travel immediately, we recommend you top up in person.

How to top up online (4 steps)

Before you start

  • You must have a registered AT HOP card
  • You will need a credit or debit card. Please have your card details handy.

Choose the card you want to top up

  • Login to MyAT.
  • Under ‘My AT HOP cards’, choose the card you want to top up then select ’Top up online’.

Enter the amount and payment details

  • Enter the amount you want to add to your card then confirm your payment details, or change if needed.
  • Select ‘Pay now’.
  • Allow for the funds to become available for use before moving on to Step 4.

Tag on to activate

To activate your top-up, you’ll need to tag on at an AT HOP reader or electronic gate within 60 days. Until then, it will show as pending in your account.

If you do not tag on within 60 days, the transaction will expire and the payment will be returned to your credit or debit card.

Other ways to top up

You can top up your card in person at an AT HOP retailer, selected vending machines, or a customer service centre.

If you’re a frequent traveller, you can load a monthly pass on your card to get unlimited travel on included services.

HOP card balance expiry

Your AT HOP card, and any value loaded on it, will expire if it is not used, no refund is requested, the card is cancelled, or no HOP money or monthly pass value is loaded onto it for a continuous period of 6 years.

If this happens, you can contact us to transfer your balance and/or the value of any deactivated products, such as monthly passes, to another HOP card.

If your HOP card expires and you don’t take action, any remaining value will be forfeited and become the property of Auckland Transport.

AT HOP card expiry

All HOP cards expire 10 years after they are bought. Once that happens, we will replace your HOP card for free.

Auto top-up your AT HOP card

Automatic top-up is an easy way to make sure you always have money on your HOP card.

How auto top-up works

When your card balance falls below your chosen minimum, it will top up by the amount you’ve selected.

Each time your card automatically tops up, you can use it immediately. We’ll send you an email confirmation.

To activate your auto top-up, tap your HOP card on the card reader when you board a bus, train or ferry. You must do this within 60 days or your top-up will be cancelled and the funds returned to your account.

If you’ve registered a credit or debit card, you can edit your payment details in MyAT.

  1. Log in to your MyAT account, select ‘View all cards’ then select the card you want to change.
  2. Go to the ‘My products’ tab then click ‘Edit’.
  3. Choose ‘Use a different card’ or ‘Use a bank account’. Select ‘Confirm’.
