Fare changes

The cost of operating a bus, train, or ferry service has increased significantly since 2021. The fare increase, which is the first in two years, will add no more than 20 cents per journey while half price fares remain in place until 30 June 2023 and the average increase has been kept below inflation and operating cost increases.

Some of our bus, train and ferry fares will be increasing between 4 cents and 40 cents.

  • AT's Zone 1, 2 and 3 fares will increase by up to 7.8%.
  • Zone 4 and 5 fares will increase by 3.1% to 5.6%.
  • Zones 6, 7, 8, and 9 there will be no fare increase.

We will still cap fares after 5 zones, maintain our off-peak travel discount of 10% and you can still enjoy 50%* off fares until 30 June 2023.

AT’s fare review process

We are required to do an annual review of all public transport fares, as set out in the Regional Public Transport Plan. The last fare change was made in February 2021.

The review takes into account:

  • increases in operating costs, such as fuel and labour
  • the cost of living
  • the investment needed to provide additional services, improvements and upgrades, such as bus stops and terminals.
  • national targets that we contribute towards.

The fare increase average is 6.5%, which is below the annual cost of inflation for most public transport modes and relative to CPI for customer affordability of +7.2%.
