Fare changes starting 4 February 2024
The costs of running buses, trains, and ferries have increased significantly in the last year. Starting 4 February 2024, we'll need to increase fares by a weighted average of 6.2% to help cover these additional expenses.
Standard adult fares will increase between 6 and 40 cents per journey on buses, trains and ferries. Fares for longer journeys are increasing by a smaller percentage, while shorter trips are still some of the most affordable in the world when compared with many other international cities.
We review public transport fares every year and this is the second time fares have increased since 2021. We're always working to make public transport more affordable for everyone. Later this year, an independent review of our fare structure will explore options such as a weekly fare cap.

AT’s fare review process
We are required to do an annual review of all public transport fares, as set out in the Regional Public Transport Plan.
The review takes into account:
- increases in operating costs, such as fuel and labour
- the cost of living
- the investment needed to provide additional services, improvements and upgrades, such as bus stops and terminals.
- national targets that we contribute towards.
Annual reviews
We normally implement fare changes in February each year. However, the last fare change was made in April 2023 as we deferred price increases by a few months due to the impact of extreme weather events. In 2022, there was no price increase at all due to COVID-19.
