From 1 July, children under 13 will travel for free and under 25s will get 50% off their fares. For all others*, public transport fares will return to full price.
*If you are a Community Services card holder, you can still get a 50% discount by applying for the Community Connect concession.

Fare changes from 1 July 2023
The Government announced age-based public transport discounts as part of Budget 2023. These discounts apply to AT timetabled bus, train and ferry services, and AT Local (excludes Waiheke and Rakino ferries).
New concessions will apply to registered AT HOP card holders under 25 years old. This includes:
- Free travel for children aged 5 to 12 years old.
- 50% off our previous child fares for children aged 13 to 15.
- 50% off regular adult fares for young people aged 16 to 24.
To get the concessions, you must
- tag on and tag off with a registered AT HOP card.
- ensure you have your correct date of birth on your HOP card.
- have a positive balance on your HOP card ($0.00 or more).

If you are 25 years old and above
You will no longer get the 50% discount off AT HOP fares, cash fares or monthly passes, as the Government's half price fares are ending on 30 June 2023.
If you are a Community Services card holder
You can save 50% on AT timetabled buses, trains and ferries in Auckland by applying for a Community Connect concession.
Children under 5 years old
Children under 5 years old do not require a separate AT HOP card and can travel for free when accompanied by a fare paying passenger.
Children aged 5 to 12
Children aged 5 to 12 years old with a registered AT HOP card can travel for free on public transport.
Children still need to tag on and off with their card (with a positive balance) and must have their correct date of birth registered to their HOP card.
Each child must carry their own, separate AT HOP card.

Children aged 13 to 15
Children aged 13 to 15 years old with a registered AT HOP card will continue to get 50% off our previous child fares, and travel for free on weekends and public holidays.

Secondary students aged 16 to 19
Secondary students aged 16 to 19 years old with a secondary concession on a registered AT HOP card will continue to get 50% off our previous child fares.

Youth aged 16 to 24 (including tertiary)
Young people aged 16 to 24 years old with a registered AT HOP card will get 50% off regular adult fares.
If you have an existing tertiary concession, it will be replaced with the new Youth concession to ensure you get the cheapest fare possible.

Tertiary students 25 years and above
Full-time tertiary students 25 years and above with a tertiary concession on a registered AT HOP card will be charged full price tertiary fares which are at least 20% off adult fares.

Community Connect concession
From 1 July, Community Services card holders can also save 50% on AT timetabled buses, trains and ferries in Auckland by applying for a Community Connect concession.
Youth concession
- If you are between 16 and 24 years old and eligible for the Community Connect concession, we recommend that you register for MyAT and apply for the Community Connect concession to receive a free HOP card if you don’t already have one.
- If you already have a registered AT HOP card, you won't need to apply for Community Connect as the Youth(16 to 24) concession will give you the same discount as Community Connect.
Accessible concession
Total Mobility AT HOP card holders will be charged full price accessible fares which is at least 40% off adult fares.

Children and youth aged 10 to 24 years with an Accessible concession
- If you are aged 10 to 24 years old and currently hold an Accessible concession, we strongly recommend you register your AT HOP card with your correct date of birth.
- Once you register yourself, your Accessible concession will be removed, and you will get the cheapest fare possible for your age group. You can still receive the Plus One Bus Companion benefit by showing your Total Mobility AT HOP card to the driver.
- You can still apply for the Accessible concession if you want to receive the Total Mobility AT HOP card and get the Plus One Bus Companion benefit. Make sure your AT HOP card is registered so AT can ensure you get the cheapest fare possible for your age group.
SuperGold concession
SuperGold card holders with a SuperGold concession on a registered AT HOP card can travel free after 9am on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays. Full adult fares apply before 9am.

Age verification
- Customers travelling on an aged-based concession (Child 5 to 12, Child 13 to 15 and Youth 16 to24) may be asked by a Transport Officer or another Auckland Transport Representative to prove they are eligible to receive the concession if they don’t look the appropriate age for that concession.
- Valid forms of age identification need to include a date of birth, for example,
- Secondary or Tertiary Student ID card
- Driver’s licence
- Passport
- Kiwi Access Card (previously the 18+ card).
- If you are travelling on a Secondary or Tertiary concession, you are required to carry a valid Student ID card with you during your travel.
In future, AT may consider additional measures for customers' age verification before applying a Child or Youth concession.
Getting an AT HOP card
You can buy an AT HOP card and register it by creating a MyAT account.
If you are eligible for a Child or Youth concession, ensure you enter your correct date of birth (between 5 and 24 years old) and the correct concession will be applied to your card automatically.
