Step 1: Plan your journey

Use the Journey Planner tool to see how you can get from A to B.

Simply enter your starting point and end destination into the Journey Planner, then click 'Plan my journey', and it will show you the transport options for your trip, including walking time, departure and arrival times, and how much it will cost. You can search for a journey that leaves now, or for a selected time in the future.

Step 2: Get an AT HOP card

It is important to know that we are no longer accepting cash payments for public transport fares. This means you will only be able to pay for your trip with an AT HOP card.

An AT HOP card is a reusable prepaid travel card to use on buses, trains, and ferries around Auckland.

Anyone can buy and use an AT HOP card. There are several concessions available including discounted fares for children, students, accessible and those over 65 years old. Find out more about AT HOP card concessions.

You can buy an AT HOP card for $10 at a Customer Service Centre or at a retailer near you, it must be topped up at the time of purchase.

Alternatively, you can buy an AT HOP card online and have it posted to your New Zealand address.

We recommend that you register your AT HOP card before you travel. Once registered, you can conveniently top-up online, set an auto top-up, and recover your balance if you lose your card.

Top up your AT HOP card

You need to top up your AT HOP card before you travel. You can add credit to your balance by:

  • Registering your AT HOP card online and topping up using your MyAT account.*
  • Topping-up in person at a station top up machine.
  • You can also top-up over the counter at many of our AT HOP retail locations.

*Make sure you top up before 10pm the night before you wish to travel. In most cases, that top up will be ready for you to use the next day, otherwise it may take up to 72 hours.

Tag on and off buses, trains, and ferries using your AT HOP card

When you board a bus, train, or ferry, make sure you 'tag on' by holding your AT HOP card flat and still on the reader for a second. The reader will flash green if your 'tag on' is successful (or green and amber for cards that have a concession applied).

If you're using the bus, board and tag on using the reader at the front door. Some train stations and Downtown Ferry terminal have electronic gates, while others have tag on/tag off posts at the entrance and exit of the platforms, ferry terminals or pontoons.

When you've completed your journey, do the same as you exit the train station, bus, ferry terminal or pontoon, to tag off. You can tag off and exit a bus via the front or back door. The reader (or electronic gate) will flash green and display the fare amount paid for your trip as well as your remaining AT HOP balance. If you don't tag off you may be charged a default fare.

Step 3: Download the AT Mobile app

We recommend that you download the AT Mobile app to help you plan your journey before you go and track your bus, train or ferry in real time on the day of your travel.

Once you've downloaded the app, you can:

  • Find the best route to your destination.
  • Check live departures time for your bus stop or train station.
  • Get notified when your bus is one stop away, or if it's time to get off your bus or train – handy for your first trip.
  • Check how full your bus or train service is before it arrives
  • View and manage your AT HOP card balance on the go
  • Turn on notifications to be alerted of travel disruptions or changes to services. We need your permission to send notifications to you, so please remember to turn them on when opening the AT Mobile app for the first time.

Top travel tips

To help make your first journey awesome, here are some of our top tips.

Travel tip 1: Arrive a few minutes early

Make sure you arrive at your stop or station a few minutes before the scheduled departure time. Some services, particularly buses, can run a few minutes ahead of schedule. Use the Live Departures in the AT Mobile app to check where your bus is in real time, so you know when you need to leave.

Travel tip 2: Set up auto top-up

After registering your AT HOP card, you can set up auto top-up. This means you can travel without worrying about having enough credit on your AT HOP card. You can even change how much you want to top-up your card by so you’re in control.

Travel tip 3: Check how much space is available on your bus or train

On the AT Mobile app and on some of our information screens at stations, you can see how full our buses and trains are before you board. This means you can decide which service to catch, based on how full it is.

What will I do for money?

There are a number of benefits and allowances you may be eligible for if you are a victim of domestic violence in New Zealand. We can help you better understand your options once you make contact.

I haven’t been beaten up, can Women’s Refuge still help me?

We support women who have experienced any form of domestic violence: verbal, psychological/emotional, sexual, and financial as well as physical. In fact, psychological/emotional abuse is the most common form of domestic violence.

How much does it cost to stay?

Women's Refuge support and advocacy services are free. In the safe house, rent is usually charged once your financial situation is sorted out. Safety is our main concern. You won't be turned away if you don't have any money.

How long can I stay in a safe house?

Some women only stay a night or two, while others stay for weeks. You can talk with the advocates at your local refuge about how long you think you need to stay to ensure your safety.

I don’t live with my partner, but he is abusing me. Can you still help me?

Yes, you don’t have to be living with your partner to experience domestic violence and you can still call us.

What happens if I haven't got any clothes or food?

Women's Refuge has clothing that you can have. We’ve also got toys and books, formula and nappies. You are welcome to use our emergency food until you get your financial situation sorted out.

Will other people be there?

Safe houses usually have other women, including women with their children, staying there. Refuge advocates are around during the day.

How will I get my kids to school?

The advocates at your local refuge will help you work out transport for your children, or help with changing schools.

Can Women's Refuge help me if I stay in my own house?

Yes, we can provide all the same support and advocacy for you no matter where you choose to live. You may be eligible to access support through the Whanau Protect service.

I'm living in a rural area. Can you still help me?

Yes. Find your local refuge and they will be able to arrange support, advocacy and transport for you.

Can Women's Refuge help around issues with children?

Yes. We can provide support and advocacy around matters to do with custody, access and care.

You should see a message in the new window saying that you are now browsing privately.

When finished, don’t forget to close your browser window to ensure your safety and privacy.

Getting out

The most important thing is for you and your children to get out safely. It is important to know that leaving a violent relationship can be one of the most dangerous times for women and children so it is important to make a safety plan around leaving and keep your plans confidential. Below are some tips to help you make a plan.

  • If you can, pack a bag with bare necessities and important documents that you can leave with someone you trust. Include important documents such as passport, birth certificate, bank account details, driver’s licence, and bank cards and other things like medicines.

  • Know abuser's schedule and safe times to leave.

  • Contact us for guidance or a safe place to stay for you and your children.

The safety of you and your children (if you have them) will be your primary concern. If you’re not ready or cannot safely leave, here are some things you can do to stay safe now.

  • Make a safety plan with the guidance of a refuge advocate.

  • Get yourself a pre-paid phone; keep it charged and safe.

  • Keep photocopies of important documents (passport, birth certificate, bank account details, medical notes, driver's licence, etc) and store these at the home of a supportive friend or family member.

  • Keep a journal of all violent incidents, noting dates and events.

  • If you can, open your own bank account and try to save some money.

  • If you have pets you are worried about, consider them in your safety plan.
