Train service changes for the new Parnell station

  • All Southern Line trains will stop at the new Parnell station.
  • Western Line trains will also stop at Parnell during evenings and weekends.
  • Onehunga Line trains will not stop at Parnell.
  • Special event services and rail bus replacements will not stop at Parnell.

This provides a 10 minute frequency at Parnell during peaks, 20 minutes between peak periods and approximately 15 minute service at night and on weekends.

Please note: Parnell station is not recommended for mobility impaired passengers until the later stages of construction are complete. Further work is planned to improve access from Parnell, the Domain and between platforms. Find out more at about station improvements at Parnell station

Changes to Onehunga Line services

  • Earlier departure times.
  • The departure platform at Britomart will change to platform 4 (currently platform 2).
  • On weekdays, limited stop services are being introduced to improve travel times and the number of units required to operate the Onehunga Line.
  • An extra Friday night service to Onehunga will depart Britomart at 12.12am.

Limited stops services

All weekday Onehunga trains before 7.12pm will be "Limited Stop" services which will not stop at Remuera, Greenlane and Parnell stations. These services will show "Britomart - limited stops" on the front train display and reduce journey times to Britomart by 5 minutes or to Onehunga by 6 minutes.

Passengers travelling from Onehunga or Te Papapa to Remuera or Greenlane before 7.12pm on weekdays, or the new Parnell station at anytime, you will need to transfer to a Southern Line train to complete your journey.

We recommend transferring at Ellerslie station which is an island platform (Penrose has separate platforms for Onehunga and Southern Lines). Wait times will generally be up to 5 minutes (2 minutes for travel to Onehunga, 5 minutes to Britomart). For the first train and some inter peak services it will be 12 or 15 minute wait.

Transferring passengers do not need to tag off and tag on when transferring between trains. Passengers only need to tag off when leaving the a station.

How to check if an Onehunga Line train is stopping at Remuera and Greenlane

  • Check the journey planner or printed timetable before you travel.
  • At the station, check the printed timetable in the information board or look at the display on the front/side of train, the destination will show as "Britomart - limited stops".
  • On board the train, listen for announcements before Newmarket/Ellerslie advising if a transfer is required.

Why we are making this change

By reducing the travel time it's possible to get more round trips from the same train which frees up a unit to be used to increase peak capacity on other parts of the network.

Remuera and Greenlane are the least used stations on the Onehunga Line and are well serviced by the Southern Line (10 minutes at peak times and 20 minutes between peak). When Southern Line trains run less frequently (ie evenings and weekends), Onehunga Line trains will stop at Remuera and Greenlane stations.

Ticket sales data show that 3.5% of passengers from Onehunga and Te Papapa stations travel to Remuera and Greenlane.

Changes to Southern Line services

  • New departure times.
  • The departure platform at Britomart will change to Platform 5 (currently platform 3).
  • Reduced journey times to Britomart by 3 minutes or to Papakura by 1 minute.
  • Three more evening services have been introduced from Britomart to Puhinui after 7pm.
  • All trains will stop at the new Parnell station and will no longer stop at Westfield station.

Reduced transfer times at Papakura

The new Pukekohe timetable has been formulated to maximise the times when the transfer at Papakura is between platforms 3 and 4, and for these connections the transfer has been reduced.

For those occasions where it was not possible and a cross platform transfer is required, the connection time has remained long enough for passengers to cross the bridge.

Changes to Western Line services

  • New departure times.
  • The departure platform at Britomart will change to Platform 3.
  • Reduced journey times to Britomart by 1 minute or to Swanson by 3 minutes.
  • Trains will stop at the new Parnell station in the evenings and weekends (the first service stops at Parnell at 7.45pm).
  • An extra Saturday night service to Swanson departs Britomart at 12.40am

How to check if a Western Line train is stopping at Parnell

  • Check the journey planner or printed timetable before you travel.
  • At the station, check the printed timetable in the information board.
  • On board the train, listen for announcements before Newmarket advising if a transfer is required.

Changes to Eastern Line services

  • New departure times.
  • No changes to the departure platform at Britomart.
  • Trains will no longer stop at Westfield station.
  • No reduction in journey times.
