Bus & transit priority lanes

Bus and transit lanes reduce congestion and speed up travel times by separating buses and vehicles with more than a single occupant. Depending on the amount of traffic, these lanes have varying operating times and conditions. All are well sign-posted and marked clearly on the road surface.

Changes to hours of operation

Over the next year, we are changing the hours that bus and transit lanes operate across Auckland.

Currently, lanes operate at inconsistent times and don't always align with peak travel times. Population growth in Auckland is significantly increasing the number of people on the roads, leading to longer periods of peak traffic conditions.

With the introduction of the new public transport network, Auckland needs more consistent operating hours to reduce delays and ensure more consistent journey times, which will in turn facilitate increasing the frequency of bus services.

With a few exceptions, the new standard hours of operation will be:

Bus lane on the northern side of Donovan Street in Blockhouse Bay, runs from the bus stop west of Rathlin Street to the bus stop west of Boundary Road.

In addition, new right-turn bays have been installed on Donovan Street at the following intersections: Lewis Street, McFadzean Drive, Shipton Place.

Fanshawe Street

Monitoring the Fanshawe Street bus lane

We are using CCTV cameras to actively monitor all vehicles travelling in the Fanshawe Street bus lane. Vehicle infringements will be issued to unauthorised vehicles driving in these lanes. If you need to enter the bus lane to turn left, this can be done up to 50 metres from your turn.

The Fanshawe St bus lanes operate 24/7 and no stopping is permitted.

Grafton Bridge

These operating times apply year round (including public holidays). During the specified operating times the bridge is closed to traffic other than buses, cyclists, motorcyclists and emergency services. All other times the bridge is open to general traffic.

Great North Road
