Expanding the public transport network

Over the next few years we are moving to a new public transport network for the Auckland region. As part of these changes, we are investigating what this might mean for Warkworth and surrounding communities.

Warkworth is a growing area, and we recognise that there is an increasing need from the community for quality transport links. The Auckland Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP), which outlines the public transport services proposed over the next ten years, allowed for the introduction of a bus service between Warkworth and Silverdale which would run 7 days a week.

The frequency would be every two hours, and hourly during peak times. Buses would terminate at a new interchange facility at Silverdale, where passengers could connect to services to Auckland City (via the Northern Express), or local services to other areas of the Hibiscus Coast.

At this stage we are seeking feedback on the proposed Silverdale link and what kind of public transport services would meet people's needs. This will help us to investigate future options. In addition we are seeking feedback on the current Kowhai Connection service which runs between Warkworth and Matakana via Snells Beach. Based on the outcome of this community engagement, we will then develop some proposed routes and timetables which would be consulted on with the community, before being launched on a trial basis.

Your views are valuable to us, so please fill out the online feedback form or the attached freepost feedback form before August 18 to have your say on future public transport services for Warkworth.

When would potential services start?

Subject to the outcome of public consultation and the appointment of bus operators, any new services would become operational in 2016. This time frame is required so that a competitive tender process can be carried out.

Services would be reviewed after at least a year of operating, based on their level of usage.

Changes to the Kowhai Connection as a result of this engagement could be made earlier, in 2015.

Priorities and constraints

With any public transport service there are always financial and practical constraints. For this reason, when providing your feedback we suggest that you describe the most important public transport services that you would use if they were provided.

The Warkworth to Silverdale service is planned to be trialled because it was outlined in the RPTP. Any other services that are suggested through this engagement, or requested changes to the Kowhai Connection, will be assessed based on feedback, funding, demand and technical or practical constraints, and may or may not be trialled or implemented.

Update on the Kowhai connection

The current Kowhai Connection service which runs between Warkworth and Matakana via Snells Beach is still being trialled in order to understand its long term sustainability, and will be reviewed at the end of this year. There are specific questions in the feedback form on this service. For more information visit www.kowhai.org.nz.
