The Albany Highway work teams will suspend work for Christmas on Wednesday 23 December and a smaller crew will recommence work on Tuesday 5 January 2016. All works will resume by 12 January 2016.

On Sunday 20 December we plan to install new line marking and switch traffic to the western side of Albany Highway between Princeton Parade and Wharf Road, weather permitting.

Looking ahead

On Saturday 19 December, from 6am, weather permitting; we will be pouring concrete within the Bass Rd Intersection. Traffic management will be in place, however all roads will remain open to traffic.

On Wednesday 2 December and Thursday 3 December we plan to lay asphalt from Rothwell Avenue to Oakway Drive on the eastern side of the road.

Over two weeks from Sunday 29th November we plan to carry out pavement works at the Wharf and Bass Intersections.

The AT contractor for the Albany Highway project, Fulton Hogan has now spent 1 year on site so far. The project is significantly ahead of the 2.5 year programme and the contractor hopes to deliver the project by late 2016.

Following the traffic switch we will clear vegetation along the Highway by Widdison Pl and Oaklands Rd, and begin the demolition of the original Days Bridge.

11 September

Albany Highway north zone progress

As this is a sizeable project, the area has been broken into five work zones, to allow Fulton Hogan to more easily manage construction and traffic control, and minimise disturbances to the local community. The following updates work across the five zones and overviews work scheduled to take place on the highway over the next few months.

Zone 1

Eastern-side works largely completed with pedestrian access opened on that side from Oakway Drive to Bush Road

Road carriageway construction underway on western side

Several retaining walls on the western side to be constructed in the lead up to Christmas to allow the remaining road widening to be completed in early 2016.

Zone 2

Undergrounding of services and stormwater construction works due for completion this month.

New footpaths and cycleways on western side due for completion in October.

Road carriageway work has commenced and the western half of the road is programmed for completion in September.

Zone 3

Drainage works, including a drilled drainage line, are due to start down Princeton Parade shortly.

New service ducting is programmed for installation before the end of 2015 with footpath and road widening works programmed for the summer of 2016.

Zone 4

Pavement widening works due to begin through the western side of the carriageway followed by construction of footpaths and berms.

Upon completion of the western side, the current traffic lanes will be switched and construction works will occupy the eastern side of the road by the end of the year.

Zone 5

Stage 1 Days Bridge construction works now complete with a traffic switch scheduled for this month.

Deconstruction of the “old” Days Bridge will begin after the traffic switch followed by construction of Stage 2 (western side) of the “new” bridge.

Father and son promote road safety

Albany Highway construction worker Nick Cain and his young son Ryder have become the focus of the road safety message during the major works there. The two, who live on the North Shore, feature on this road safety sign encouraging motorists to keep speed down through the construction zone.

Police too are urging motorists to abide by the current 30kph speed limit along the Highway, having already issued hundreds of tickets for incidents of high-risk driving through the work. 

“Poor driving behaviour is putting the safety of road-workers and the public at risk,” says Senior Sergeant Brett Campbell-Howard of Waitemata police.

“It only takes one mishap at high speed and someone could be injured or killed. The people working here are simply earning a living and they shouldn’t be put at unnecessary risk just because someone is running late, is annoyed at the road works, or simply chooses to ignore the lowered speed limit”.

“Recently, we issued 39 speed infringement notices in just two hours in that area. We caught someone who was driving at 79kph through
the 30kph zone”.

On August 9 and 10, weather permitting, we will commence rescheduled stabilising and chip sealing the eastern side of Albany Highway between Bush Rd and Oakway Dr:

One-way detour and road closure on the nights of Sunday 9 August and Monday 10 August: Albany Highway will be reduced to a single southbound lane between Oakway Dr and the Bush Rd intersection. Northbound traffic will be diverted at Bush Rd. During these works Rothwell Ave will be closed at the Albany Highway intersection.

On Tuesday 11 August, weather permitting, we will lay chip seal on the newly stabilised road. Albany Highway will be open to traffic in both directions. If delayed, this work will be done on the next available night.

Between Bush Rd and Schnapper Rock Rd we are planning to switch traffic onto the eastern side of Albany Highway on Wednesday August 12 2015, weather permitting.

On 5 and 6 August, we will commence stabilising and chip sealing the eastern side of Albany Highway between Bush Rd and Oakway Dr. One-way detour and road closure on the night of Wednesday 5 August; Albany Highway will be reduced to a single southbound lane between Oakway Drive and the Bush Road intersection. Rosedale Road closure 10 - 13 July 2015

A section of Rosedale Road - from Albany Highway to William Pickering Drive - will be closed from 6pm Friday 10 July to 5am Monday 13 July 2015 (weather permitting).  

This road closure allows for completion of major works, including the reconstruction and completion of the Albany Highway/Rosedale Road intersection. The traffic signals will be activated during July.

Detours will be in place to redirect traffic via:

Albany Expressway,

Rothwell Avenue,

Bush Road.

All businesses in the area will remain open during their normal business hours, and pedestrian and cycle access will be available along Rosedale Road. Albany Highway will remain open to traffic at all times.

Vehicles needing to enter or exit properties in the affected zone during the closure should discuss their needs with traffic staff on site, who will assist.

Four large steel-reinforced concrete beams, each weighing about 60 tonnes, were lifted into place at Days Bridge, a 300 tonne and 400 tonne crane working in tandem.

The lifts took place on a Sunday night to minimise traffic disruption and the cranes were set up on the road.

The traffic detour route is Rosedale Rd/Bush Rd/Albany Expressway and will add about 7 minutes to your journey so please plan to leave a little earlier when travelling during this time. We apologise for any disruption. Access for residents will be maintained.

Temporary road closures: Albany Highway - northern section

Albany Highway will be closed to through traffic between Wharf Road and Albany Expressway, from 3pm Sunday 24 May to 5am Monday 25 May 2015.

Detours will be in place to redirect traffic via Rosedale Road, Bush Road and Albany Expressway (see the temporary road closure map below).

Vehicles needing access to properties in the affected zone should enter from the north (Albany Expressway) and staff on site will assist.

This road closure allows for bridge beams to be lowered into place for the Days Bridge construction.

Generally, works each week are Sunday to Thursday, however, we are not working through Easter, the Thursday night prior to Good Friday, or the nights of Easter Sunday and Monday.

AT has reviewed and amended plans for the lane configuration on the Albany Highway North project. This is due to further study of future bus movements and efficient use of the transit lanes. 

1 October

Open days on the Albany North upgrade project will be held at Kristin School at 360 Albany Highway at the end of this month.
