Church Street/Victoria Street, Onehunga intersection upgrade Church Street/Victoria Street, Onehunga intersection upgrade
Auckland Transport (AT) is making some improvements to the intersection of Church Street and Victoria Street in Onehunga.
Project status: Consultation
Project zone: Central
Project overview
Auckland Transport is committed to improving the safety of our roads for all people. Based on a number of criteria, including crash data, the intersection of Church and Victoria Streets in Onehunga, has been assessed as high-risk. As a result, a raised table and roundabout is being added. The raised table will slow traffic as it enters the intersection, reducing vehicle on vehicle crashes. It will also improve pedestrian safety by slowing traffic, making the intersection safer for all road users.
Benefits
- Changing the intersection control to a roundabout will make the intersection safer to navigate.
- Slowing traffic with a raised table to reduce the likelihood of accidents between vehicles.
- Providing links and safety improvements for pedestrians with the addition of 4 zebra crossings to the roundabout.
- Installing pram crossings, tactile pavers and signage to make crossing safer.
- Upgrading bus stops.
- Widening some footpaths to improve accessibility.
Timeline
- 31 October 2019 – work commences.
- 4 to 10 November 2019 – northern side of the intersection closed.
- 16 to 17 and 23 to 24 November 2019 – southern side of the intersection closed.

Project details
Design
Auckland Transport consulted on this intersection in May 2019.
After consultation, we conducted a safety audit review of the design and some changes were made to the design that was presented to the community during consultation. Specifically, the audit indicated that visibility for cars turning left might be compromised due to the position of property fence lines and foliage. At this point, three of the four zebra crossings were removed.
Recent public feedback, however, has caused us to reassess the final design. It is AT’s view that the inclusion of the raised table slows traffic enough that all four zebra crossings can be installed.
Additional improvements
People will see other improvements, such as upgraded pram crossings, tactile pavers, and signage. New road markings, including the word ‘SLOW’ from all approaches, will draw driver attention to the upcoming intersection.
There will be localised footpath widening and kerb realignments.
Bus stops to the east of the intersection will be upgraded to standard. One of these bus stops will be relocated a short distance.
