City Rail Link routeRoute

The City Rail Link will be built in two 3.4km-long, twin tunnels up to 42 metres below the city centre. It will extend the existing rail line underground through Britomart, to Albert, Vincent and Pitt Streets, then cross beneath Karangahape Road and the Central Motorway Junction to Symonds Street before rising to join the western line at Eden Terrace.

As much as possible, the project is below city streets to reduce the effects on property owners and heritage buildings. The new line will provide for two additional stations in the vicinity of the Aotea Centre and Karangahape Road, and a redeveloped Mount Eden Station.

The three new stations will improve access to more parts of the city centre and major employment areas, and will double the number of people within 30 minutes' train-travel of a city station.

Underground alignment

The route was selected after extensive analysis of a large number of options.

Future rail lines

Creating the CRL and turning Britomart into a through station makes future expansion of the rail network possible. Without the CRL, proposed rail lines to the North Shore, the airport and the Avondale-Southdown line would not be possible because the rail network doesn’t have the capacity to run enough trains.
