Walmsley Rd, Atkinson Ave, Mangere Rd, and Avenue Rd Stage 1
Stage 1 of the transport improvements covers new and upgraded facilities for public transport users, pedestrians, and people on bikes on Walmsley Road, Atkinson Avenue, Mangere Road, and Avenue Road.
- Walmsley Road, Ōtāhuhu: new shared path for pedestrians and people on bikes, a T3 transit/truck lane, and upgraded bus stops – currently under construction.
- Atkinson Avenue, Ōtāhuhu: T2 transit lane and upgraded bus stops – currently under construction.
- Mangere Road, Māngere, and Avenue Road, Ōtāhuhu: upgraded bus stations - completed June 2017.
Walmsley Rd transit lane, and walking and cycling improvements
Project status: Construction.
Changes along Walmsley Road, Ōtāhuhu, will optimise the road network for public transport, people on bikes, and pedestrians while balancing the need for cars and freight vehicles.
Before finalising the design, we asked for feedback on proposed changes from 8 to 17 February 2017.
Details of improvements
- Creating a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists by extending the current footpath into the road area on the western side of Walmsley Road.
- Creating transit lanes (T3) in both directions between Māngere Road and Station Road. This will improve bus, trucks, and freight priority measures. Vehicles with 3 or more people can also use the transit lane. At the moment, regular delays are experienced in this area, especially during weekday peak periods.
- The new transit lanes will operate from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm weekdays.
- Installing new bus stops to increase connectivity in the region and ensure they are of a consistent length, and are easily accessible (with lead-in and lead-out tapers) so buses can safely pull in and out of the stops.
Road markings and signs will be updated to reflect the changes.

Bus stop facilities for Māngere and Ōtāhuhu town centres
Project status: Completed June 2017.
We have built new bus stop facilities for both the Māngere and Ōtāhuhu town centres and provided improved bus shelters along the route.
Mangere Road, Māngere
The new bus facilities on Māngere Road include 7 bus stops (2 more than currently), extend the covered passenger area, provide a covered connection to Māngere town centre, a toilet adjacent to the bus shelter, cycle racks, an additional westbound lane for traffic, and paving and landscaping of the area around the bus station.

Avenue Road, Ōtāhuhu
In Ōtāhuhu, the existing bus station on Avenue Road has been replaced by new bus stops and bus shelters have been installed on both sides of Avenue Road, retaining a familiar bus stop location for existing passengers.
New Exeloo toilets were installed to replace the existing toilets, and a redesigned canopy covers the head of the bus stop.
