Glen Eden Town Centre safety improvements project updates Glen Eden Town Centre safety improvements project updates

13 April 2022

Work has resumed

Between 3 April and 5 May we will start construction on a signalised mid-block crossing at 6 Glenview Road, Glen Eden and restart construction on the intersection of Glenview Road and West Coast Road.

The improvements will include:

  • A new signalised crossing at 6 Glenview Road.
  • An additional signalised crossing at the intersection of Glenview Road and West Coast Road.
  • A new or modified pram crossings and footpath.
  • Asphalt resurfacing and new signs.

We sincerely apologise for the delay in re-commencing this project. In addition to the delays that occurred as a result of COVID 19, we faced several complications last year. The main ones being related to work near the railway corridor on Glenview Road. This involved many key parties from Kiwirail and Auckland Transport being consulted to ensure safe construction methodology and planning was in place.

Work will be undertaken at night to reduce the impact on the traffic in the area, however, we do understand that this will have a large impact on local residents and would like to extend to them our appreciation during this time.

How will it affect you?

  • Please expect some travel delays and allow for extra time to reach your destination.
  • Detours will be in place between 7pm and 6am, whilst night works are carried out on the intersections.
  • Access will always be maintained for emergency services, pedestrians and cyclists.
  • This type of work involves machinery which can create noise, vibration and dust. However, we will use industry best practices to keep these to a minimum.
  • For your safety, please keep young children and animals well supervised and clear of any work area.

3 October 2021

As Auckland has moved to Level 3 from Wednesday 22nd September, our work has resumed.  Work crews have adopted strict Covid19 working protocols.

From the 3rd October to the 31st of October we plan to work on the West Coast Road and Glenview Road intersection as well as Captain Scott Road Intersection. Work includes footpath works, installation of new traffic signals, asphalt surfacing works and minor drainage works. This will be undertaken at night to reduce the impact on the traffic in the area, however, we do understand that this will have a large impact on local residents and would like to extend our appreciation during this time.

The project as a whole is scheduled to be completed in late November 2021.

How will it affect you?

  • Please expect some travel delays and allow for extra time to reach your destination.
  • Detours will be in place between 7 pm and 6 am whilst night works are carried out on the intersections
  • Access will always be maintained for emergency services, pedestrians and cyclists.

Latest update Glen Eden projects

The Glen Eden Town Centre safety improvements programme is underway, and we appreciate this has caused some disruption to travel routes for many residents.

We would like to provide a quick update and advise that the project is still on track for delivery and the contractors are working to complete the following:

  • Converting the Corner of Captain Scott Road to a one-way direction, with left turn only entrance from West Coast Road, along with additional diagonal parking
  • Widening parking on West Coast Road just down from Fresh Choice
  • Installation of a raised signalised pedestrian crossing from the corner of Captain Scott Road across to the Train station and Bus stop
  • Resealing of West Coast Road from Janet Clews Place to Glendale Road

Members of the community have expressed their concerns about the height of the speed tables on West Coast Road. The final reseal of the road surface will reduce the severity of the bumps and this reseal will be done after the other works are complete.

The purpose of the speed tables are to reduce speed and to make it safer for everyone in the Glen Eden community, especially those walking to the train station, schools and local businesses.

Project update – Glendale Road/Oates Road intersection

The Glen Eden safety improvements project continues to progress well.

The intersection of Janet Clews Place and West Coast Road is complete. It now has a raised speed table as an entry gateway to the Glen Eden town centre.

The intersection of Glendale Road and West Coast Road is expected to be completed by 5 March 2021, weather dependent.

From Monday, 8 March, the project will move to the intersection of Glendale Road and Oates Road. At the end of the work here, there will be a new roundabout and two new zebra crossings on raised speed tables. People will also see traffic islands added to each arm of the intersection.

The roundabout and speed tables will better control and slow traffic movements. The zebra crossings will make it safer and easier for people moving about on foot to cross at this intersection.

Work continues at the intersection of Bowers Road and West Coast Road.

Bowers Road / West Coast Road intersection

The Glen Eden safety improvements project is progressing well.

The intersection of Janet Clews Place and West Coast Road is complete. It now has a new raised intersection to help slow traffic. A new high friction surface will be added to the uphill (south-eastern) approach to the intersection at the end of the project when the road is resurfaced.

From Monday, 22 February, the project will move to the intersection of Bowers Road and West Coast Road. The left-turn slip lane and pedestrian refuge will be removed with this turn being controlled by traffic lights. Two parking spots on West Coast Road, at the entrance to Fresh Choice, will be removed to improve visibility for people exiting the supermarket car park. Each arm of the intersection will have a traffic light-controlled, pedestrian crossing added to it. At the end of the project, a red surface will be added to highlight the pedestrian crossing locations at the Bowers Road intersection.

The Glendale Road intersection is expected to be complete in the coming two weeks. We’ll provide another update at that time.
