Bridge Street (Puhinui Road) cycleway Bridge Street (Puhinui Road) cycleway
The Bridge Street cycleway project will provide an important link connecting existing cycling facilities on Great South Road and Cavendish Drive with SH20.
Project status: Complete.
Project zone: South
Project overview
The Bridge Street cycleway will provide on-road cycle lanes along Puhinui Road, from SH20 to Kenderdine, then up Kenderdine Road to Bridge Street, along Bridge Street to Cambridge Terrace and along Cambridge Terrace back to Puhinui Road. The on-road cycle lane will then continue along Puhinui Road between Cambridge Terrace and Gt South Road.
Shared-use paths are being added in sections where it is safer for cyclists to be separated from vehicular traffic.
The proposed plan will also provide on-road cycle lanes along Noel Burnside Road to join Cavendish Drive to the cycling facilities on Puhinui Road.
Timeline
Construction of the cycleway will begin late February 2015 and is expected to be completed by February 2016.

As a result of continuing design work, the following amendments have been included:
Reasons to change design | Changes | Result of changes |
---|---|---|
Outside 284 Puhinui Road markings do not physically prevent vehicles parking dangerously on the corner. |
Instead of using markings to formalise the parking use a kerb build out. |
No difference to the number of on-road parking spaces when compared with the design from June 2013. |
Lack of visibility for cyclists and pedestrians using the shared-use path around the corner of Puhinui Road and Kenderdine Road. |
Placed cycle lane on the road by the kerb but adjust the path vehicles take and ramp up cycle lane to |
Drivers slow to take the sharper corner, increasing safety. Easier for pedestrians to cross the road. Cyclist |
Site observations indicate that motorists do not indicate correctly at the Kenderdine Rd / Bridge St intersection making it difficult for cyclists turning right from Kenderdine Rd into Bridge St to know if a vehicle is turning. |
Solution suggested in June 2013 diverts cyclists further up Kenderdine and as a result, would |
Provide delineation island on the western side of Kenderdine just north of Bridge Street. Drivers slow to manoeuvre past the island. Greater likelihood drivers will indicate left. More visibility of cyclists. |
Parking
In order to keep as much parking as possible, the proposed cycle lane will alternate from being adjacent to the kerb to adjacent to parking (see the planning maps for details of parking areas). Along Burnside Drive, the proposal is that most car parking will be removed in order to accommodate the cycle lane.
The proposal is to remove certain sections of parking. We have taken a closer look at where to retain the parking and where parking can be more formalised with road marking.
About cycleways
The proposed cycling facility fills in a gap in the current cycleway network. Research shows that patronage of cycle facilities dramatically increase when they are consistent and continuous throughout a region. AT wants to complete cycleway networks to promote sustainable modes of transport and improve accessibility for a wide range of travellers, not just motorists.

Previous project updates
6 October 2014
The Bridge Street cycleway construction has been postponed until February 2015.
8 November 2013
Updated plans for the Bridge Street cycleway project (formerly known as the Puhinui Road project) have been released.
June 2013
As a result of the Puhinui Road Parking Survey (PDF 148KB) and other feedback, the following amendments have been included:
Reasons to change design | Changes | Result of changes |
---|---|---|
More drop-off and pick-up areas are required for Puhinui School. |
Formalised parking in Norman Spencer Dr and reduce flush median. |
Formalise 19 parks in Norman Spencer Dr and increase 2 parks on Puhinui Rd. |
Existing parking area outside 284 Puhinui is not safety positioned. |
Formalise parking with road marking |
Existing 5 informal parking spaces on Puhinui Rd formalised into 1 space. Existing 3 informal parking spaces on Noel Burnside Rd formalised into 6 spaces. |
Cycle land poses |
On road cycle lane to |
Safer cycleway. |
Site observations indicate that motorists do not indicate correctly at the Kenderdine Rd/Bridge St intersection, making it difficult for cyclists turning right from Kenderdine Rd into Bridge St to know if a vehicle is turning. |
Extend shared use path up Kenderdine Rd and construct a speed table across Kenderdine Rd north of Bridge St. |
Motor vehicles need to flow down at the point where cyclists and pedestrians are crossing to highlight the presence of cyclists and pedestrians. |
