Project status: On hold
Project zone: South

Project overview

This proposal will provide on-road cycle lanes along Great South Road, from the Drury Interchange to Wellington Street, Papakura. Also proposed are shared-use paths on the corner of Great South Road and Rosehill Drive and from just north of Butterworth Avenue to Clark Road.

The proposal does not include the section from Slippery Creek Bridge to Gatland Road, as this is currently part of another scheme that includes cycling facilities.

Consultation on the plans closed on 15 August 2012 and the feedback received from the public was evaluated.

Parking

Parking surveys show that parking along much of the route is under-utilised. The proposal includes the plan to include some recessed parking along the route - final design plans will be sent out once the consultation is completed.

The parking survey did identify a need for parking on Great South Road in the vicinity of Drury School. To meet parking demand in this section, the proposal includes a recessed drop off/pick up zone.

About cycleways

The proposed cycling facility fills in a gap in the current cycleway network. Research shows that patronage of cycle facilities dramatically increase when they are consistent and continuous throughout a region. AT wants to complete cycleway networks to promote sustainable modes of transport and improve accessibility for a wide range of travellers, not just motorists.
