Hill Street intersection improvements Hill Street intersection improvements

Auckland Transport (AT) will be making one of the region’s most popular intersections safer with improved traffic flow in and around Warkworth.

Project status: Design
Project zone: North

Project overview

Auckland Transport, with support from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, has listened to public feedback on the redesign of the current intersection and calls to upgrade the traffic pinch-point.

The Hill Street intersection in Warkworth has been a bottleneck for travellers between Auckland and Northland, Warkworth locals and holiday-makers for decades, and with a business case having been completed, AT now have funding to begin the next stage of the project to improve safety and traffic flow.

The important intersection provides access to Warkworth town centre, Mahurangi peninsula and surrounding communities including Snells Beach, Matakana, Omaha and Leigh. With its location on State Highway 1, it carries a large amount of traffic on a daily basis and is prone to delays.

This projects objective is to facilitate ease of access and way finding for all modes through the intersection.

Benefits

  • New cycling and walking facilities
  • Five-arm roundabout will improve traffic flow through Brown Road/Great North Road
  • Three-arm roundabout will improve traffic flow through the Sandspit Road and Matakana Road intersection.

Timeline

  • Detailed design and pre-implementation – October 2021 to early 2023.
  • The Auckland share of the funding for construction has been included in the Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP). The balance of funding will need to be approved by Waka Kotahi as part of the National Land Transport Programme. Information on when construction of improvements will occur will be made available once that is concluded.

Project details

It is expected that the completion of the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway and Matakana Link Road will reduce traffic flows at this pinch point and travel patterns through Warkworth are expected to change. The planned growth in Warkworth, however, will see increased movements through the intersection.

The business case provided a recommended option for improving the intersection, while also securing funds to move forward with providing detailed design of what the intersection will look like.

It is recommended that the signalised intersection at Hill Street be turned into a five-arm roundabout, with a three-arm roundabout constructed at the Sandspit and Matakana Road intersection. Cycling and walking facilities have been included in preliminary designs.

Waka Kotahi is currently the asset owner of the Hill Street intersection, however, with the view that the existing state highway through Warkworth will be revoked on completion of the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway, it is agreed between AT and Waka Kotahi that the design and implementation will be carried out by AT.
