Project overview

AT has implemented a loss of control/bend treatment programme to reduce the risk of death and serious injury across all Auckland roads.

The programme aims to mitigate and address the risk associated with loss of control type crashes and provide treatments that help motorists approach and negotiate bends safely.

By changing how we display road messaging, we can reduce the risk of motorists misinterpreting the road environment on unfamiliar roads.

Project details

To achieve the aim of this project, we will be:

  • Rationalising existing signs at applicable destinations
  • Improving the signing of road bends
  • Improving road markings and installing new raised, reflectorised pavement markers (cat's eyes)
  • Improving the road surface with high friction materials to improve skid resistance.

Project stages – Package 1, 2 & 3

These packages contain 21 sites, where 197 loss of control crashes were reported from 2015 to 2019. 2 of these crashes resulted in fatalities, 13 resulted in serious injuries, and 60 resulted in minor injuries. There were also 40 recorded crashes (1 fatal, 1 with serious injuries, and 16 with minor injuries) from 2020 to 2021.

Next steps:

Site verification works

To minimise the impacts of work on stakeholders, AT's Road Safety Engineer, our contractor and an independent Road Safety Engineer, will undertake site visits along the routes. This is to ensure that any signage at individual locations, such as signage that is close to property access, does not impact the visibility of oncoming traffic.

Road reseal and road marking upgrades

As part of these works, some sites will require resealing with a specialised, high friction material. We will also be remarking the existing road markings along the routes with longer life materials and new raised, reflectorised pavement markers (cat's eyes).

We expect to carry out this work in March to April 2022, depending on weather conditions. These upgrades will improve the delineation and bend awareness along these routes, especially at night. 

Signage upgrade

Our contractor will begin installing new signs at the same time as or after road marking. We expect this part of the programme to be carried out until end of April 2022.
