Managing parking effectively is vital to achieving the intensive and vibrant residential and commercial developments in New Lynn.
In November 2012, Auckland Transport reviewed parking in and around the New Lynn town centre. The goals were to promote the efficient use of available parking, contribute to the town centre’s economic growth and vitality, and support sustainable transport options and retail activity by prioritising short-stay parking. To achieve this, AT proposed the following:
- Great North Road (between Totara Ave and Portage Road) - new P60 parking zone, replacing existing restrictions, with the exception of bus stops, loading zones, clearways and no stopping restrictions (broken yellow lines).
- Great North Road (between Totara Ave and Memorial Drive) – new tidal parking during off peak times.
- Memorial Drive – new taxi stand and P5 loading zone, outside the new McCrae Way medical building.
- McCrae Way – new shared zone, with new P5 loading zone restrictions within the shared zone.
- McCrae Way – north and south on-street car park will have a new P60 standard restriction.
- Totara Ave - new standard P120 restriction in the community centre car park.
- Mobility parking - new standard P180 parking restriction.
- New car park building – long term paid parking provided.
Businesses, property owners and tenants were asked for their views on these proposals, and once this feedback was incorporated, a guide to parking in New Lynn was released. This guide is also available at the library, community centre and at many of the businesses in the area.

Off-street parking options
A. McCrae Way multi-level public car parking building – accessed from McCrae Way via Great North Road or Memorial Drive. Pay & Display parking building, with free parking on the first level for users of the medical centre only. The top deck is a development site, and will eventually be for residential use only.
B. New Lynn Community Centre car park – 68 P120 spaces accessed from Totara Avenue.
C. McNaughton Way car park – 174 unrestricted parking spaces, 13 P120 spaces and one P180 mobility space accessed from Hugh Brown Drive or the corner of Great North Road and Delta Avenue.
D. McCrae Way North parking area – 65 P60 spaces and 2 mobility spaces accessed from McCrae Way or Great North Road (through the McDonald’s car park).
E. McCrae Way South parking area – 23 P60 parking spaces and one P180 mobility space accessed from McCrae Way.
