New Windsor intersection improvement New Windsor intersection improvement

Auckland Transport (AT) is making it safer for all people to use the intersection of Methuen Road and Bollard Avenue, New Windsor.

Project status: Construction
Project zone: Central

Project overview

This intersection of Methuen Road and Bollard Avenue has been assessed, based on crash data, to be unsafe.

Police reports tell us that most crashes at or near this intersection have resulted from vehicles failing to heed the controls currently in place. Other crashes are the result of poor visibility as a result of parked cars at/near the intersection.

Project details

The planned improvements include:

  • Putting in a roundabout to better control traffic.
  • Introducing broken yellow lines at the corners of the intersection to improve visibility.
  • Extending kerbs/berms to help slow traffic and help pedestrians cross the road by narrowing the carriage way.
  • Adding traffic islands to provide a place for pedestrians to wait while they cross Bollard Avenue.

Benefits

We want to make our roads safe for everyone – people walking and cycling, especially our kids and senior citizens, as well as people driving. Projects like this are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. Read about Vision Zero.

Once the work is complete, it will be:

  • Safer for drivers using the intersection because the movement of vehicles will be better controlled and visibility will be improved.
  • Safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the road on foot.

Timeline

  • Early November – project starts.
  • End of January – project ends.

Funding

This work is funded by Auckland Transport through the Regional Fuel Tax.

Public consultation

We consulted on this project in late 2018. Your feedback was generally supportive of the need for safety improvements while suggesting additions or changes to the proposal.

We listened to your feedback and are proceeding with the improvements as originally consulted.
Find out more about the consultation and the reasons for proceeding unchanged.

Next steps

Our contractor, Fulton Hogan, will contact affected residents at least 48-hours before construction starts.

Auckland Transport has been speaking with the owner of 44 Methuen Road about the need to remove the tree on the corner of their property. We will be replanting as part of our programme.
