Signage that helps you get to places varies all over Auckland.
A project team, working with different council entities, has been formed to develop one signage system that can be used across the whole region.
A proposed signage system has been trialled in 4 areas of Auckland to help
The signage is now in the final stages of completion.

A consistent signage system will:
- Make it easier for locals and visitors to explore Auckland.
- Give Auckland's signage a consistent, modern look.
- Help promote active travel and healthy lifestyles.
Timeline
- Fourth quarter 2017 - New signage system confirmed (expected). This will include protocols and a comprehensive set of guidelines to ensure consistency for directional signage.
- Ongoing - once the system is confirmed, new signage will be rolled out over the coming years by Council organisations as old signs come up for repair and upgrade.
Project detail
Each of the previous councils in the Auckland region had their own directional signage systems, with varying forms, styles, and colours.
The new single-council structure provides opportunities to introduce one signage system that will make it simpler to understand how to get around Auckland - whether you are walking, cycling, driving or using public transport.

Signage trial
Four precincts have been used. Signage in the trial includes street signs, pedestrian signs, information hubs (large and small), cycling signs and routes, and public transport signage.
Grafton Gully cycleway
Grafton Gully is an off-road route for cycling and walking that connects the Northwestern cycle path to the city centre.
Wynyard Quarter
One of our main city centre entertainment precincts where locals and visitors eat and explore. This makes it the first touchpoint of the signage system for tourists and locals at leisure to explore the city and travel to other locations and attractions eg. The Museum, Zoo, Ponsonby, Devonport and beyond.
New Lynn
New Lynn is an area undergoing major redevelopment. There
Signage has been installed around the town centre and at New Lynn, Avondale and Fruitvale Road train stations.
Northcote shopping centre
Northcote shopping centre is a classic residential suburban hub with a multi-cultural mix.
Mana whenua signage
As part of the signage project, we have installed distinctive Māori interpretive signs across the Auckland region. Each tells a different unique story of local iwi in both English and Te Reo Māori.
The signs have been installed in Auckland Central, Mangere, Patumahoe, Panmure, Pukekohe, Wellsford, Warkworth, and on Great Barrier Island.
Feedback
Public feedback from initial testing has influenced marrying aspects of the design, including an increase in the font size and change of colour for street blade signage.
