Check below for updates on the progress of repair work in your community here.

These are long-term repairs which means it will take more than six months to fix. See our frequently asked questions to see the different work stages to repair a road affected by weather events.

If your road is not on the list (or no longer on the list), it's open, with no restrictions and safe for all to drive on.

What you need to know

  • Land especially around our Western beach communities & Waitākere Ranges areas continues to be unstable. Soil saturation remains quite high so there is still a risk of further slips, and any more rain may cause further movement. Remain vigilant.
  • Have a plan and be ready to leave quickly if you need to, especially in areas prone to slips.
  • Access to Karekare, Piha, Te Henga Bethells Beach, Muriwai, Anawhata, Huia and Whatipū are compromised. Please stay away. Do not add additional pressure to these communities by trying to visit them at this time.
  • Do not attempt to voluntarily clear fallen trees or debris, or excavate slips or roads in these areas. It is unsafe. Please leave it to emergency response crews and contractors as they have safety assessment procedures in place. Whilst it can look safe, there can be stability issues in the ground beneath.
  • In some places, it’s unsafe to open the road to even one lane of traffic, due to the nature of the damage, and the unknown stability of the remaining road surface.
  • Please do not attempt to travel through closed sections of the road. This can cause further damage and risk to your safety and the safety of others.
  • Sightseeing is discouraged especially in resident-only access areas. This puts already vulnerable roads under stress and causes safety risks. Access is only for those who live in those areas.

Temporary repairs & drainage underway

Open - under restrictions

A slip that developed after Cyclone Gabrielle has worsened after the heavy rain on Tuesday 9 May.

From Tuesday 16 May, the road is now open with limited access under traffic management.

The following restrictions will apply from Tues 16 May:

  • Access is from either side of the slip, during daylight hours only, with staff controlling the traffic management
  • Only 1 vehicle at a time
  • Weight limit of 3 Tonnes applies i.e. up to a large ute or SUV

We’re working hard to get the permanent repair underway for this section of Caton Road, but due to the extent of the damage, it’s likely to take up to 6 months to start repairs and limited access will apply until then.

We understand this is a stressful situation for residents and we’ll continue to monitor the site, especially after heavy rain.
