Auckland Transport upgraded Papakura rail station and the rail yard to improve passenger experience and transport efficiency.

Project overview
Each day, more than 2000 people use Papakura train station. It is the third busiest station after Britomart and Newmarket.
Work on Papakura Station included refurbishing the old heritage building, upgrading platform amenities with new canopies, furniture and lighting, enlarging the Park n Ride, creating a new bus interchange and constructing a new platform on the western side of the station.
KiwiRail rearranged the tracks to provide a dedicated freight line through the station and optimised track and platform layout in preparation for electric trains.
The station will also function as an interchange for diesel shuttle trains to and from Pukekohe.

Progress
Work was carried out in stages and included:
- Upgrading platform amenities such as canopies, furniture, lighting, CCTV signage and passenger information displays.
- The old heritage building was given a new lease on life. It was refurbished, has a new verandah and now houses a ticket office, information displays, new public toilets and room for a café kiosk.
- Inside the building, the old signal panel has been preserved.
- The 80-year-old manual signaling system was replaced with a modern automated signaling system.
- New staff facilities for train operators on the east side of the station.
- The Park & Ride was enlarged.
- A new bus interchange and passenger waiting area.
- The Kiss ‘n’ Ride drop off area was improved.
- Road work was realigned/changed.
- Dedicated freight line.
- Back-shunt area for diesel and electric trains.
- Rail track formations and drainage were improved.
