Project overview

Auckland Transport will be conducting an amber/red arrow lantern trial over the next year at:

  • The intersection of Beach Road and Stanley Street.
  • The intersection of Blockhouse Bay Road and New North Road.

The goal of the trial is to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at single left turn slip lanes.

The initial trial is intended to start in late-May and last for 12 months and will allow us to:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness and safety of these signals for pedestrian crossings on single lane left turn slip lane.
  • Assess driver understanding of these signals for pedestrian crossings on a slip lane.

Depending on the outcome of the trial the new lanterns may become permanent.

Benefits

  • The two-aspect (yellow and red) vehicle signals will control traffic on a left turn slip lane allowing pedestrians to cross on a green “WALK” pedestrian signal.
  • The use of two-aspect (yellow and red) vehicle signals at a slip lane would allow traffic to be stopped using the usual yellow – red sequence associated with traffic signals but traffic could filter after the pedestrian phase has finished.
  • When the traffic signals are not showing red or yellow i.e. when they are “off”, traffic on a “Give Way” controlled slip lane would be required to give way to all other conflicting traffic at the intersection while traffic on a free flow slip lane would continue uninterrupted.

Timeline

  • May 2019 – install traffic signals at intersections.
  • Late-May/Early-June – start of trial.
  • May 2020 – end of trial.

Stage 2: Pedestrian pushes the crossing button and initiates the light sequence. The yellow left turn light is activated and vehicles prepare to stop.

Stage 3: The red light stops vehicles and the pedestrian signal allows for people to cross the road safely.
