Background

Auckland Transport (AT) have recently started work to remove some level crossings before the City Rail Link (CRL) opens to the public, including the pedestrian level crossing on Kingdon Street. Visit the pedestrian level crossing removal project webpage to find out more.

The removal of Kingdon Street pedestrian level crossing will mean more people will use Davis Crescent as the closest alternative route. We are making improvements to Davis Crescent to make this route safer and easier to use before we remove the level crossing.

Community engagement

In July 2023, AT engaged with the community in relation to the removal of Kingdon Street pedestrian level crossing. To ensure people can continue their journeys safely and easily, we proposed the following improvements:

  • A wider footpath on Davies Crescent from 1.3m to 2.5m
  • A new raised table crossing on Short Street

The project team asked for feedback about these improvements and encouraged suggestions for other improvements that could be made.

In early 2024, we continued to work closely with local businesses along Davis Cresent and Short Street about the project to make minor changes to the proposed improvements and minimise disruption.

Community engagement did not focus on the removal itself because of the safety regulations which we must comply with. Our engagement was about how we can improve Davis Crescent to make it easier and safer to use.

What you told us

Our community engagement has provided us with valuable feedback about the proposed improvements to Davis Cresent. A summary of this feedback is below.

Wider footpath

  • 36 responses supported a wider footpath. This included support for removing car parking, more space and amenity, and suggestions for widening the footpath on both sides of Davis Crescent.
  • 41 responses did not support wider footpaths. This included concerns about removal of car parking, impacts on local businesses, walking distances, and traffic congestion.

Raised table

  • 35 responses supported a raised table. This included feedback on pedestrian safety, crossing location and vehicle speeds.
  • 33 responses did not support a raised table. This included concerns related to walking distance, traffic congestion and safety.

Our response

In response to community feedback, we will install:

  • A wider footpath on Davies Crescent from 1.3m to 2.5m
  • A painted zebra crossing on Short Street (this will no longer be a raised table)
  • Upgraded lighting

A new raised pedestrian table on Short Street was considered but this will now be a painted zebra crossing at the same level as the road. We recognise that the street is already a low speed zone and the painted zebra crossing will achieve the same safety outcomes, reduce cost and minimise disruption to local businesses.

We are required to remove 2 car parks, including 1 on Davis Crescent and 1 on Short Street. These car parks create sightline issues for vehicles exiting near Urbano Interiors and for pedestrians crossing near Lumsden Green. Both car parks are currently non-compliant and must be removed regardless of the improvements.

Parking on Davis Crescent

We recognise that customers for some businesses rely on the on-street car parking on Davis Cresent, including customers who make short appointments.

The project will be delivered in stages to minimise disruption for these businesses and impacts on car parking. Please note that the dates for these stages are subject to change.

Stage 1: 29 April – 12 May 2024

  • On-street parking will be available on both sides of Davis Crescent
  • Some on-street parking will be temporarily removed on Short Street 

Stage 2: 13 May – 28 May 2024

  • On-street parking will NOT be available on both sides of Davis Crescent
  • On-street parking will be available on both sides of Short Street

Stage 3: 29 May – 10 June 2024

  • Some on-street parking will be temporarily removed on Davis Cresent and Short Street, but most will remain.

Please note that on-street parking on Kingdon Street, Carlton Gore Road, and in front of Urbano Interiors will not be impacted. Off-street parking is also available nearby.

Next steps

Construction begins on 29 April 2024 and will take approximately 6 weeks to complete.

The Kingdon Street pedestrian level crossing will be removed later in mid-2024 after we improve Davis Crescent.
