Auckland Transport launches pre-summer pothole blitz Auckland Transport launches pre-summer pothole blitz

Date: 20 October 2025

Auckland Transport (AT) is once again rolling out its pre-summer Pothole Promise campaign, encouraging Aucklanders to report potholes on roads near them so maintenance crews can fix them, fast.

The promise remains unchanged from last year: 95% of potholes reported on Auckland’s arterial and high-volume regional roads will be repaired within 24 hours. Potholes on all other sealed roads will be fixed within five working days.

This year, AT is encouraging Aucklanders to include a photo when reporting a pothole, where possible, to help road crews locate and assess potholes more efficiently.

AT Group Manager for Road Asset Maintenance and Renewals Alan Wallace says that our suppliers are out on the network carrying out pothole repairs throughout the year, but the longer, drier days in October and November are the perfect time for a bigger repair push.

“Last year our contractors repaired more than 6,000 potholes across the region and we are committed to repairing them as quickly as possible,” Mr Wallace says.

“Potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the road surface, weakening the pavement underneath and Auckland’s high rainfall and aging road network make potholes a recurring challenge.”

Increased funding from Auckland Council and the Government is allowing AT to increase the amount of preventative road maintenance work it does on the network such as road resurfacing which will reduce the number of potholes occurring in the future.

“We’re asking Aucklanders to help us keep roads safe by reporting potholes when they see them — and if you can, please include a photo,” Alan Wallace says.

“Photos make a big difference in helping our crews find the exact location and understand the severity of the pothole. We’re also now asking for an email address when you report a pothole. This means we can follow up if the location isn’t clear — and let you know once it’s been fixed.”

Notes to the editor:

  • AT is running a customer information campaign from 20 October till 16 November to encourage Aucklanders to report potholes so these can be repaired well ahead of the busy holiday season period on our roads.
  • The 24-hour response time applies to AT’s arterial and regional road network — the main traffic routes — which carry more than 10,000 vehicles per day across 1,400 km of sealed roads.
  • For the rest of Auckland’s sealed roads our promise is to repair potholes within five days.
  • Over the 2024/25 summer period AT resurfaced 427km of Auckland’s roads and plans to continue to increase that over the next three years.
