How do I pay for ferries in Auckland?

You can pay for most ferries using your AT HOP card or contactless payment. Some ferries require you to purchase a ticket ahead of time.

How much does the ferry to Devonport cost?

An adult AT HOP fare from central Auckland to Devonport costs $7.40, or $11.50 with cash. A child AT HOP fare from central Auckland to Devonport costs $4.44, or $6.50 with cash.

How much does the ferry to Waiheke cost?

An adult fare from central Auckland to Waiheke costs $27.50 with Island Direct or $29.50 with Fullers360. A child fare from Auckland to Waiheke costs $13 with Island Direct or $13.50 with Fullers360.

How do I get a monthly ferry pass?

Make sure you have a registered AT HOP card. In your MyAT account, choose the card you want to apply a monthly pass to, go to ‘Available products’, and select ‘Buy a monthly pass’. Choose the type of pass you want, confirm your payment details, and select ‘Pay now’. Allow one hour for the pass to be processed, then tag on to activate.

Do seniors travel free on Auckland ferries?

Yes, seniors travel free on Auckland ferries, except for Waiheke and Belaire services.

Do children travel free on Auckland ferries?

Children under 5 travel free on Auckland ferries when going with a paying passenger. They do not need their own AT HOP card. Children age 5 to 15 travel free on weekends when using their registered AT HOP card (excluding Waiheke and Belaire services).

What are the ferry zones in Auckland?

There are 3 ferry zones: inner harbour, mid-harbour, and outer harbour. Inner harbour includes Bayswater, Birkenhead, Te Onewa Northcote Point and Devonport. Mid-harbour includes Half Moon Bay, West Harbour, Beach Haven and Hobsonville Point. Outer harbour includes Gulf Harbour and Pine Harbour.

Discounts are available when using a registered AT HOP card with a concession applied for:

Community Services cardholders
Total Disability cardholders

Children under 5 years old travel free on Auckland ferries if they’re with a paying passenger. They do not need their own AT HOP card.

Children aged 5 to 15 years can travel free on Auckland ferries on weekends and public holidays using their registered AT HOP card. This excludes Waiheke and Rakino ferry services.

Seniors with a concession on their AT HOP card can travel free on Auckland ferries after 9am on weekdays and anytime on weekends and public holidays. This excludes Tiritiri Matangi and Rakino services. For travel before 9am, adult fares apply.

How to pay for ferries

The easiest way to pay for ferries in Auckland is with an AT HOP card or contactless method.

Contactless payments are accepted on all ferry services except Fullers360 Waiheke service and Belaire Rakino service. AT HOP is accepted on all ferry services except Belaire Rakino Island service.

‘Tag on’ when you board and ‘tag off’ when you exit. When tagging on and off, remove your card from your wallet or phone case so that the correct card gets scanned. Always use the same card or smart device to tag on and off so that you’re charged the correct fare.

If you do not have a HOP or contactless payment method, you must buy a paper ticket before you board.

You can purchase a single-use ticket from a ticket machine or customer service centre.

Monthly passes for ferries

There are several monthly pass options available for frequent ferry travellers. These are only available on registered AT HOP cards.

Inner Harbour: $195 per month

This is for ferries travelling to or from the city centre and Bayswater, Birkenhead, Te Onewa Northcote Point, or Devonport.

Mid Harbour: $310 per month

This is for ferries travelling to or from the city centre and Half Moon Bay, West Harbour, Beach Haven, or Hobsonville Point.

Outer Harbour: $400 per month

This is for ferries travelling to or from the city centre and Gulf Harbour or Pine Harbour.

Waiheke Island: $400 per month

This is for either Fullers360 or Island Direct services to or from the city centre and Waiheke Island.

How monthly ferry passes work

Monthly passes are valid for one calendar month from the date you tag on. For example, if your tag-on date is 13 January, your pass is valid until midnight of 12 February.

Monthly ferry passes include buses and trains in the same zone as the start or end of your ferry trip.

Waiheke monthly passes include bus and train travel within the same zone as the start or end of your ferry trip. This includes Waiheke Bus services. Fullers360 monthly pass also includes travel between Devonport and Waiheke Island.

Waiheke monthly passes are only valid for the service specified. You cannot use an Island Direct monthly pass on a Fullers360 ferry service.
