Your city moving
Find out how we're using parking spaces in the best way we can to keep Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland moving.
Using our streets and parking spaces more dynamically is just one way we're improving our network as the city grows. We want everyone to be able to move around safely and efficiently.
Your input is crucial in helping us proactively manage our roads. If you spot something that could be improved, Contact us so we can assess it.
How dynamic parking spaces keep Auckland moving
Parking spaces are a convenient spot to stop and get things done, but we're thinking about how they could do more.
An example is a parking spot changing into a fast-moving bus lane in the morning. In the evening, the spot might turn into a T2 transit lane. This could:
- speed up commuting
- reduce traffic congestion
- make sure your journey home is smooth.

How we're making deliveries easier
We're repurposing some of our parking spaces into convenient loading zones. This will make sure there are plenty of spots for your deliveries.
Types of loading zones
Auckland's 2 types of loading zones are:
- general purpose loading zones for picking up or dropping off goods and passengers
- goods vehicles only loading zones that are reserved for commercial goods vehicles.
Remember to follow the signs next time you stop at a loading zone to avoid a fine.
How we're adapting to Auckland's rapid growth
The population of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland is expected to reach 2.5 million by 2050. The city is going through significant changes, and our roads are under increasing pressure.
How we're responding to growing pressure on roads
Most of our roads can’t be widened any further. With housing intensification happening across the city, our roads are feeling increasingly tighter. We need to:
- design and utilise our roads to maximise productivity
- create a dynamic transport system that meets the needs of all Aucklanders.
How we'll manage parking spaces as Auckland grows
As Auckland continues to grow, the way we manage our parking spaces will also change. This will make sure parking management is:
- aligned with the delivery of new infrastructure and services
- providing sufficient time and opportunities for Aucklanders to adjust.
