Report potholes or footpath issues
We address issues quickly to keep our roads in the best possible condition for everyone.
Help us keep our roads safe by letting us know when they need fixing.
If there’s a road or footpath issue that poses an immediate risk to the safety of people or property, call 09 355 3553.
Tell us the:
- location (ideally a specific address or landmark)
- issue (for example, a pothole in the road or uneven footpath).
Otherwise, report the problem online.
What we look after
We maintain all assets in the public road reserve. This is the area from property line to property line.
We’re responsible for just over 7,800km of sealed roads, including 1,400km of regional arterial roads. An average of 10,000 vehicles use our arterial roads every day.
We maintain:
- public roads
- footpaths
- kerbs
- channels
- drain covers.
We do not maintain:
- state highways and motorways
- private roads
- roads outside Auckland
- berm mowing
- private vegetation
- pipes and other assets below ground.
Street light maintenance is shared by Auckland Transport (AT), Vector and Counties Energy.
Road maintenance
Pothole repairs
Our priority is to create a safe and reliable road for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Our road repair crews respond to pothole reports quickly and efficiently. This minimises disruption to local traffic, prevents vehicle damage and helps Aucklanders reach their destination smoothly.
A pothole repair means making it safe as quickly as possible. It’s a temporary repair. Some potholes will keep reoccurring when there’s been lots of rain. We know this can be incredibly frustrating for people.
Fixing potholes is part of our wider road maintenance programme to provide better connections with well-maintained roads. Every summer we reseal and rebuild around 400km of our roads which prevents potholes from forming in the first place.
Footpath maintenance
To create a safe walking environment for pedestrians, we maintain public footpaths that are part of the road reserve. This includes fixing:
- cracks
- potholes
- uneven surfaces
- deterioration.
Street cleaning
Auckland Council is responsible for cleaning streets and footpaths in town centres. This includes emptying litter bins.
AT cleans the streets and footpaths outside of town centres. We do this to keep the city looking clean and tidy.
If you have any questions about street and footpath cleaning, contact Auckland Council.
