What it is
Ready Steady Go! is a unit of 10 lessons aligned to Phase 2 of the updated curriculum. It's about encouraging healthier, active travel options that are better for both students and the planet.
The programme includes timed lesson plans with activity sheets, curriculum links, assessment rubrics, video links and a take-home flyer. Fun classroom resources include a giant double-sided floor puzzle (on loan to your school) and an A3 poster map for your class to keep.
Aim
The programme aims to help students understand the benefits of active travel, make safer travel choices, and recognise how everyday transport decisions can support their health and wellbeing and the environment.

Ready Steady Go! is a cross-curricular programme with lessons aligned to Te Mātaiaho | NZC Phase 2 learning areas:
- Health and Physical Education.
- Social Sciences.
- English.
- Mathematics and Statistics.
Curriculum links and learning areas are listed for each lesson, together with the success criteria and how these are achieved in the classroom.
Learning opportunities
Students explore why active travel is good for physical and emotional wellbeing and the effects of transport on the environment. They work on a giant jigsaw puzzle to identify risks in their environment and learn safe travel behaviours. The 'How far can you go?' class challenge incorporates active travel goal setting on a poster map and campaign planning activities enable students to share their knowledge and drive change across the school.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the unit, students will:
- understand the health and wellbeing benefits of active travel and be encouraged to make it a regular part of their lives
- recognise how transport choices impact the environment and be inspired to consider active travel as a sustainable option
- begin to develop the knowledge and skills to identify hazards, manage risks, and travel safely and independently in their community.
