Overview

Transport projects across Māngere are improving local walking and cycling so it’s safer and easier to get around.

Māngere is flat and well‑suited to everyday cycling, with many short, local trips to schools, churches, parks and community hubs.

This programme ties recent upgrades together to close gaps in the network and connect people to key destinations including Auckland Airport and neighbouring areas like Onehunga and Ōtāhuhu.

It’s about more than new paths - it’s about a better‑connected Māngere shaped with local input, delivering:

  • protected cycleways
  • safer crossings
  • improved access to bus stops and town centres.

How these projects build a connected Māngere

Together, these projects form a joined‑up network linking:

  • Māngere Bridge
  • Māngere Town Centre
  • Bader Drive
  • Moyle Park
  • future connections toward Favona, Favona, Ōtahuhu train station, Middlemore Hospital, Papatoetoe and beyond
  • existing connections ti the Auckland Airport area.

Māngere West Cycling Improvements fill a vital gap between Māngere Bridge Village and the airport area, while the Centre Park shared path and Robertson Road upgrades strengthen everyday links to schools and parks.

The outcome is safer, healthier travel with more choices for whānau across Māngere.

Project background

Māngere is a high‑priority area for transport investment, with rapid growth in housing and jobs (especially around the Airport) and many short local trips suited to cycling.

The programme responds by creating safer, more connected routes for everyday travel.

The Māngere West route was shaped with strong local involvement.

Collaboration forums and consultation informed the preferred route and balanced diverse community needs, following best‑practice guidance.
