About film parking permits

To reserve parking spaces at a film shoot location in the Auckland region, you must apply for a film parking permit.

Film parking permits are only for essential film equipment vehicles. They are not for crew vehicle use.

Benefits of the permit process

By applying for a film parking permit, production companies can:

  • reserve parking spaces for essential film equipment vehicles
  • legally place cones to reserve these spaces.

Checks are also made to see if other activities are already planned in the same area. This might include:

  • work being done by Auckland Transport
  • works by other companies or contractors
  • planned events
  • other film shoots
  • traffic management plans already in place for that area.

If there is a clash the production company would need to consult with the other party to work through this.

On-street parking

If you're applying to use on-street parking, you must also consult with nearby businesses and residents. If there is a local business association in the area they must also be included in the consultation. This ensures your filming activity does not affect day-to-day use of the area.

Other filming permits

A film parking permit is not the same as a film permit.

You will need a film permit if you will be filming or placing filming equipment in an open public space. This includes areas such as footpaths, roads, parks, beaches and other public facilities.

Screen Auckland (opens in a new tab) manage the film permit process.

Terms and conditions

Film parking permits are not valid for use in:

  • loading zones
  • P2, P5, P10 or P15 time restricted zones
  • prohibited parking zones. This includes broken yellow lines, clearways, bus stops, taxi stands or mobility parking bays.

In these zones vehicles must comply with displayed time restrictions. Standard parking enforcement will apply.

Film parking permits are not valid where an existing temporary traffic management plan is already in place. Any potential clashes will need to be reviewed, and consultation with other parties carried out, before the requested start date.

Film parking permits do not guarantee availability of any parking spaces. All on-street parking operates on an as available basis.

Prior consultation with surrounding businesses and residents must be undertaken to ensure your activity does not affect day to day operations in the area. Failure to do so may result in film parking permits being revoked.

AT reserves the right to revoke the permit at any time, including in response to feedback from businesses or residents.
