How to pay for public transport as a visitor

You can pay with:

  • contactless debit or credit cards, smartphones or smart devices
  • AT HOP cards
  • paper tickets (only train and ferry services, not available on buses).

How often services run

All buses, trains and ferries mentioned on this page travel:

  • at least every 15 minutes
  • 7am to 7pm
  • 7 days a week.

No need for a timetable, just turn up and go.

Parnell village

Parnell’s historic buildings are filled with boutique shops and art galleries. To get there, catch the bus from Britomart (stop 7018) or near the Sky Tower (stop 1089). Ride 10 minutes then get off at the Parnell shops (stop 7188).

Newmarket shops

Next up is the enormous Westfield Newmarket shopping centre. Take the bus from the Parnell shops (7188). Ride 10 minutes then get off at stop 7203.

Auckland city centre

End the day with Commercial Bay’s luxury brands and award-winning restaurants. Take the train from Newmarket Station and ride 10 minutes to Waitematā Station.

Parnell

Start the day off right with breakfast in Parnell. Catch the bus from Britomart (7018) or near the Sky Tower (1089). Ride 10 minutes then get off your bus at the Parnell Shops (7188).

Wynyard Quarter

Make your way back to central Auckland for lunch in Wynyard Quarter. Take a 10-minute bus ride from the Parnell shops (7187) back to Britomart precinct (7016). Walk for 15 minutes along the Auckland waterfront and past the Viaduct Harbour to Wynyard Quarter.

Ponsonby Road

Catch the bus from Wynyard Quarter (1061) to Ponsonby Road (7215) for ice cream. This takes 9 minutes.

Karangahape Road

Get drinks and dinner on one of Auckland’s liveliest streets. Ride 5 minutes on the bus from Ponsonby Road (7215) to Karangahape Road (7131).

Kelly Tarlton’s

New Zealand’s most iconic aquarium is just 12 minutes from Britomart. Bus from Commerce Street (7019) to Kelly Tarlton’s (7320).

Auckland War Memorial Museum

A world-class museum in a hundred-year-old building. It overlooks the city from the Auckland Domain. Ride 6 minutes on the bus from Britomart precinct (7018) to Ayr Street (7196). Walk 8 minutes along Domain Drive to Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Dine outdoors then take a short ferry ride to the quaint seaside village of Devonport.

Wynyard Quarter

Head to Wynyard Quarter, a waterfront precinct known for its relaxed vibe, scenic location and modern New Zealand cuisine. From the Downtown Ferry Terminal, walk 15 minutes along the Auckland Waterfront. Keep going past the Viaduct Harbour to Wynyard Quarter.

Devonport

Enjoy the heritage and coastal beauty of Devonport, accessible by a relaxing and affordable ferry ride. Walk back to the Downtown Ferry Terminal (15 minutes). Then take the 12-minute ferry ride to Devonport.

A short bus ride over the harbour bridge to the beach suburb of Takapuna for shopping, water activities and outdoor dining.

Takapuna

Take the short scenic bus ride with views of the sparkling Waitematā Harbour and city skyline to Takapuna. This is a vibrant beachside suburb with a stunning white sand beach and lively hospitality scene. Catch the 82 bus from SkyCity Auckland stop (1332). Ride for 17 minutes across the Harbour Bridge to Takapuna (3568).

Back to the city centre

Take the bus back from Takapuna (3551). Ride 17 minutes to Wellesley Street (7041).

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Head to the Auckland War Memorial Museum for world-class exhibitions. Get on the bus at Britomart (7018) and ride 6 minutes to Ayr Street (7196). Walk 8 minutes along Domain Drive to Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Auckland Art Gallery

New Zealand’s largest and most inspiring art gallery, featuring over 17,000 artworks. Walk 8 minutes from the Auckland War Memorial Museum to Ayr Street (7195). Ride 11 minutes on the bus toward the city centre and get off near Auckland University of Technology (AUT) (7089). From there, it is a 3-minute walk to the Auckland Art Gallery.

An easy climb up Mount Eden / Maungawhau, the highest volcano in Auckland. You will get spectacular views of the harbour and city.

Take a 15-minute bus ride from Commerce Street (7026) to Tahaki Reserve stop (1870).

Mount Eden summit

Walk to Hillside Cresent North and up Puhi Huia Road then follow the track up Mount Eden. The walk is 2.1km long. It takes 40 minutes and you climb 3,510 steps.

Get on the bus at Stop D Lower Albert (1005) and ride for 15 minutes to Auckland Zoo (stop 8124).

Z Pier water sports

Bus to Z Pier for water sports like kayaking, jetboating and jet skiing. To get there, go to Stop A Lower Albert (1002) or Stop E Lower Albert (1006). Ride 4 minutes to stop 7036.

Z Pier is 7 minutes’ walk from stop 7036.

Auckland Harbour Bridge

Climb the Harbour Bridge or bungy jump off the top of it. The Harbour Bridge is a 20-minute walk from Z Pier.
